From Victorian masterpieces to dazzling modern hubs, the world’s great railway stations are far more than transit points; they’re architectural icons, cultural landmarks and gateways to unforgettable journeys. This collection showcases ten extraordinary stations across the globe, each with its own story, style and sense of place, inviting travellers to experience the romance, history and innovation of rail travel at its finest.

St Pancras – Eurostar

St Pancras Station is one of London’s great architectural triumphs, blending Victorian grandeur with modern European connectivity. Opened in 1868 for the Midland Railway, it showcased bold engineering through William Henry Barlow’s vast iron‑and‑glass train shed, then the largest single-span roof in the world. Its striking Gothic Revival frontage, designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott, later became the iconic Midland Grand Hotel.

After falling into decline in the 20th century, the station was spectacularly restored and reopened in 2007 as St Pancras International, transforming it into the UK’s gateway to Europe via the high-speed Eurostar service to Paris, Brussels and Amsterdam. As of the time of writing, Eurostar services connect London directly with Paris, Brussels and Amsterdam, offering fast, city centre to city centre travel that has redefined cross Channel mobility.

Sirkeci Istanbul – Venice Simplon-Orient-Express

Sirkeci Station invites travellers into the romantic world of the Orient Express, where Europe once met the magic of Istanbul. Opened in 1890 and designed by German architect August Jasmund, its elegant blend of European and Ottoman styles (glowing stained glass, carved motifs, and Art Nouveau details) creates an unforgettable first impression. As the eastern terminus of the legendary Paris to Istanbul Orient Express, it became a symbol of luxury and adventure from 1883 to 1977, welcoming diplomats, writers, and explorers into the city’s historic heart beside the Golden Horn.

Today, restored halls and the Railway Museum preserve its golden age charm, offering visitors a chance to step back in time and experience one of Istanbul’s most atmospheric landmarks. Although nowadays the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express stops short of the station at Halkali, with a scope of possibly returning to Sirkeci, when in Istanbul do stop by to admire the grandeur of decades past.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus Mumbai – Maharaja Express

Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CSMT), Mumbai’s UNESCO listed masterpiece, rises in a breathtaking fusion of Victorian Gothic Revival and traditional Indian architecture, created by British architect F. W. Stevens between 1878 and 1888. Its grand dome, turrets, stained glass and sculptural details make it one of India’s most iconic landmarks; a true ‘Bombay Gothic’ treasure where East meets West in spectacular form.

Today, this historic terminus forms an unforgettable starting point for travellers boarding the Maharaja Express, India’s most luxurious train. While only certain departures and itineraries use CSMT, its journeys evoke the same royal splendour: offering opulent cabins, curated excursions and a window into India’s rich heritage, all echoing the grandeur embodied by Mumbai’s legendary station.

Today, this beautiful station serves as the departure point for the Canyon Spirit train, offering travellers a seamless blend of history and adventure as they begin their rail journey into the American Southwest.

From this iconic station in the Mile High City, the Canyon Spirit embarks on a spectacular daytime-only route through Colorado’s canyons, river valleys and mountain passes, reaching Moab and Salt Lake City. Amsterdam Centraal – A European Hub

Amsterdam Centraal, opened in 1889 and designed by Dutch architect Pierre Cuypers, is a monumental blend of Gothic and Renaissance Revival architecture that has become one of the Netherlands’ busiest and most important railway hubs. Its grand red‑brick façade, cast‑iron roof spans, and richly decorated halls make it a destination in its own right, while recent renovations have seen modernisation without compromising its historic charm.

Today it connects Amsterdam to cities across Europe via operators such as NS International, Eurostar, European Sleeper, and ÖBB Nightjet, including direct overnight services reaching all the way to Vienna; a comfortable way to travel from the canals of Amsterdam to the heart of Austria. For travellers arriving via Eurostar from London, Amsterdam Centraal represents the first greeting card for a weekend sojourn visiting the ‘Venice of the North’.

São Bento Station, inaugurated in 1916, is one of Porto’s most beautiful landmarks, built on the site of the former Benedictine Convent of São Bento da Avé‑Maria and designed by architect José Marques da Silva in a graceful Beaux‑Arts style. Its grand entrance hall features around 20,000 azulejo tiles painted by Jorge Colaço, depicting Portuguese history and everyday life in breathtaking detail, making the station feel like a free public museum in the heart of the city.

Though São Bento serves regional and urban trains (the high‑speed Alfa Pendular does not depart from here); it remains an essential, inspiring stop for any visitor to Porto.
