6 OF THE BEST ROAD TRIPS IN AUSTRALIA

Planning a road trip to Australia? Here are our top picks of the best driving routes to embark on...

The Great Ocean Road is one of the world's most iconic and scenic coastal drives! With a rugged coastline, craggy cliffs, quiet beaches and dramatic viewpoints, this drive hugs the southwest coast of Victoria. Add in hiking, surfing and native wildlife, and this is a definite one for your bucket list!

Best time to drive it: Summer (December to February) as the skies are clear and the views are epic.

For the more adventurous backpacker, the Gibb River Road in the Kimberley, Western Australia, is a true outback odyssey. Why is it more adventurous, you may ask? This is due to the majority of the road being gravel or highly corrugated, meaning a 4WD is a must. Originally constructed in the 1960s to transport cattle, it spans 660km in length and cuts through one of Australia's most vast, untouched wildernesses.

Best time to drive it: Dry season (May to November)

Australia's east coast takes in stunning beaches, epic coastlines, lush rainforests and endless adrenaline activities! Add into the mix some incredible wildlife, great surfing spots and plenty of sunshine and you have the perfect remedy for an amazing road trip! If you’re lucky, you might even spot kangaroos sunning themselves on the beach! Hiring a motorhome is the ideal way to experience this part of Australia if you want the flexibility to do exactly what you want to do.

Best time to drive it: Spring (October to November) or Autumn (March to May) as it's warm and less busy than the summer months.

Why not add on a trip to Rottnest Island to get the ultimate quokka selfie?

Best time to drive it: The wildflower season blooms between September and November so this is a gorgeous time to visit! For keen hikers, the Coast to Coast walk is a stunning choice.
