I was lucky enough to experience a preview of this exciting new route coming April 2026 in their Premier upgrade. This iconic journey commences in Denver, Colorado. Be sure to spend extra days in ‘The Mile High City’ prior to this trip as it exceeded my expectations.
The adventure starts at Denver Union station - a restored architectural jewel dating from 1881 - where I boarded Canyon Spirit in the morning. We were greeted by smiling Hosts at each door who pointed us to the right train car and explained how to find our seats. As the train departs the urban landscape, it quickly transitions into the rugged beauty of the Rocky Mountains. This stunning route follows the Colorado River, presenting us with breathtaking views of steep canyons, dense forests and towering mountain peaks.
A short while after departure, a toast is held to the great journey ahead, then breakfast is presented. Each meal is perfectly curated to represent the passing landscape and options on the menu are explained by the in-house culinary team member.
Today’s journey is the longest by time and shortest by distance, meaning the train is slowly meandering through the mountains, giving ample opportunities to enjoy that picture perfect view. Make sure to make the most of the extra outdoor vestibule viewing areas, a perk of having the Premier upgrade.
One of the highlights of this segment is the passage through the ‘tunnel district’, a 20-kilometre stretch featuring 30 tunnels hand-carved through solid rock in the early 20th century, culminating with the Moffat Tunnel, a 10-kilometre marvel of engineering. The train’s glass-dome coaches ensure panoramic views, fully immersing you in the scenery. Knowledgeable onboard Hosts share stories and insights about the passing landscapes, enriching the experience with historical and cultural context and a LOT of humour.
Arrive in Glenwood Springs in the evening, with just about enough time to either head in town for dinner or take advantage of the mineral waters that give it its name. I chose the latter, and although this isn’t included in the Canyon Spirit package, I found it a good way to relax for a couple of hours in the rich mineral hot springs.
On the second day, we continued westward and were amazed how quickly the landscape undergoes a dramatic transformation. The lush greenery of Colorado gives way to the mesmerising red rock formations of Utah. In between breakfast and lunch, be sure to spend some more time admiring the landscape from the vestibule. With just over four hours on the train today, there are still plenty of opportunities to mingle with fellow guests or have a drink at the bar. This section of the journey showcases some of the most stunning vistas of the journey, including Ruby Canyon, where the red sandstone cliffs reflect brilliantly against the Colorado River. Don’t worry about missing the Hosts’ commentary though, because it is audible in the vestibule too – yes, they thought of everything. Oh and by the way, if you’re not at your seat during meal orders the culinary team member will come find you to take your order.
Keep your eyes peeled for the state line crossing from Colorado to Utah, which is etched on a cliffside, as the train meanders alongside the Colorado River. As the train approaches Moab, you’ll be greeted with views of natural archways and unique geological formations, characteristic of the region’s desert landscape. Depending on the selected package, choose to add on a tour of Arches or Canyonlands National Parks. The landscape is truly breathtaking and it looks very similar to the Grand Canyon, both having been shaped by the Colorado River.
In the morning we got whisked away by bus to see the stunning Arches National Park, with time for a short optional hike included. This tour is available to add on to a Canyon Spirit journey. The park’s highlights include ‘Delicate Arch’ or ‘The Windows’ and are also part of this half day tour - albeit 'Delicate Arch' is seen from a distance. Before we knew it, we were back on the train, excited to see what the last day brought. Once in motion - as if by magic - lunch appeared, ready to satisfy our appetite from all that walking.
After a relaxed lunch, head to the one of two lounge cars – which are for the exclusive use of Premier upgrade guests – and take advantage of the range of the complimentary snacks and drinks, including crafted cocktails. The Cosmopolitan (pictured) was probably one of the best I’ve had, and the fact that it was made on a moving train makes it even more impressive. This is really a time to just enjoy the onboard facilities on that last stretch to Salt Lake City and reminisce with fellow travellers about the previous couple of days. A light afternoon tea is served prior to arrival, then the inevitable end to an amazing journey arrives. Saddened but thankful, I bid farewell to the lovely staff (and received the biggest hug too) and headed to my hotel, enjoying one final night in Salt Lake City.
It is said that the small details are the ones that really make or break an experience and it cannot be truer for Canyon Spirit. One of my favourite features that makes this experience that more premium is the luggage delivery service. Leave your suitcase behind and travel with ease knowing that it will be waiting in your room at the next hotel. Ultimately though, I believe the staff are the ones that make this journey extra special - from the hardworking culinary team members in the kitchen to the bartenders, Hosts and onboard engineers - they put the spirit in ‘Canyon Spirit’!
I wholeheartedly recommend this once-in-a-lifetime trip not just to rail enthusiasts, but to anyone who wants to travel in comfort and style, mingle with like-minded peers and really feel looked after.
