Belize is a brilliant choice if you want to combine a beach holiday with some adventure. You can spend days snorkelling over colourful coral reefs, head inland to explore ancient Mayan ruins and jungle-clad mountains, or venture into caves and nature reserves before finishing your trip on a laid-back tropical island.

But when is the best time to visit Belize? Read on for our guide to find out…

When is the best time to visit Belize?

• Best overall weather: February to April

• Best for beaches and snorkelling: February to April, when conditions are generally drier

• Best for whale sharks: March to June, around certain full moon periods

• Best for fewer crowds: May and November, depending on the destination and local conditions

• Best for lush rainforests: The rainy season, if you don’t mind the occasional downpour!

• Months to plan carefully: September and October, when tropical storms and hurricanes are a greater consideration

Belize’s dry season generally runs from November to May, while the wetter months fall between June and November. These seasons overlap slightly because the transition varies by region and from year to year. April is typically one of the driest months, while September and October can bring heavier rainfall.

Belize’s dry season: November to May

This is generally the best time to visit Belize, particularly from February to April. Expect plenty of warm, sunny days and better conditions for exploring Mayan archaeological sites, hiking inland, and heading out on snorkelling or diving trips.

December to February can be busier, particularly around Christmas and New Year, so book accommodation and popular excursions ahead of time.

Belize’s rainy season: June to November

The rainy season in Belize brings more humidity and heavier showers, often in the afternoons, although you can often still enjoy lots of sunshine between them. The countryside becomes wonderfully green and there are often fewer visitors and better value accommodation options.

September and October are typically the wetter months in Belize and tropical storms can sometimes disrupt travel plans. If you visit during this period, leave some flexibility in your itinerary if possible.

Belize’s shoulder season: May and November

These months can be worth considering if you want to avoid the busiest travel periods. May is hot and marks the transition towards the wetter season in many areas, while November can bring improving conditions as the rains ease.

Neither month guarantees perfect, but both might offer a useful balance between outdoor activities, quieter attractions and potentially better prices.

When is the best time to see whale sharks in Belize?

Whale sharks are one of Belize’s most exciting marine wildlife attractions. These gentle giants visit the waters near Placencia, and the traditional whale shark season runs from March to June.

April and May are the best months to visit Belize if swimming with whale sharks is high on your wish list. However, it’s worth noting that these are wild animals and sightings cannot be guaranteed, even during the expected season. It may be worth allowing a few days in the Placencia region rather than replying on a single excursion.
