Nestled between Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia, Laos is South East Asia’s hidden gem; a land of tranquil temples, misty mountains, and winding rivers. Whether you’re drawn by the laid-back rhythm of Luang Prabang, the wild beauty of Southern Laos, or the mysterious Plain of Jars, choosing the right time to visit Laos can make all the difference.

Read on for our guide to the best time to visit Laos, to help you make the most of your time in this wonderful country.

The Dry Season (November to April): The Best Time to Visit Laos

If you want ideal weather, clear skies and comfortable temperatures, the dry season is the best time to visit Laos.

Temperature: Between 15°C and 30°C.

Weather: Dry, sunny, and pleasantly warm.

Best for: Sightseeing, trekking, river cruises and photography.

Highlights of visiting Laos in the dry season:

• Luang Prabang is at it most charming, with golden temples glistening in the sun.

• The Mekong River is calm, perfect for boat trips or slow cruises to Pak Ou Caves.

• Vang Vieng’s karst landscapes are lush and the Nam Song River is ideal for kayaking or tubing.

• Festivals like That Luang Festival (November) and Pi Mai Lao (Lao new year in April) bring colour and joy to every corner of the country.

The Green Season (May to October): Lush Landscapes & Fewer Crowds

The rainy season (or monsoon season) in Laos transforms the countryside into a vibrant green paradise. While there are occasional downpours, mornings are often sunny, and travel remains rewarding – especially for those seeking a more tranquil experience.

Temperature: Between 25°C and 35°C.

Weather: Warm and humid with afternoon rains.

Best for: Nature lovers, waterfall chasers and photographers.

Highlights of visiting Laos in the green season:

• Waterfalls like Kuang Si Falls and Tad Fane are at their most spectacular.

• Rice paddies shimmer with new growth; perfect for scenic photography.

• Fewer tourists mean more authentic local experiences and lower prices.

If you want perfect weather and lively festivals, November to February is the best time to visit Laos. If you prefer fewer crowds and lush green scenery, June to October offers incredible beauty and peace.

Ultimately, Laos is a year-round destination, and each season has its own charm. Whether you’re sipping coffee on the Mekong in the dry season, or exploring misty mountains in the monsoon, you’ll find Laos to be a soulful, unforgettable experience.
