Eastern & Oriental Express - South East Asia's Legend of the Rails

Embrace slow travel in luxury on the sister train of the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express. Offering two return itineraries taking you through the heart of Malaysia from Singapore, the legendary Eastern & Oriental Express, A Belmond Train offers an iconic rail experience and high levels of service, all wrapped up in the charm and glamour of a bygone era. Both itineraries are three nights, starting and ending in Singapore – the perfect stopover option if heading to Australasia or another part of Asia.

Essence of Malaysia

Route: Singapore – Kuala Lumpur – Langkawi – Penang - Singapore


Duration: 4 Days/3 Nights


When: November to February


 

Day 1 - Singapore to Kuala Lumpur    


Board the handsome green and cream carriages of the Eastern & Oriental Express at Woodlands Station, Singapore, and settle into your air-conditioned cabin. As evening falls and it’s time to dress for dinner. Savour the flavours of locally inspired specialities in the Dining Car, followed by engaging entertainment on board.      


Day 2 - Kuala Lumpur to Langkawi    


During breakfast, soak up the vistas as the train passes the rice paddies and timeless rural villages of western Malaysia. Alight at Alor Setar station for a 25-minute boat trip to Langkawi’s Pulau Payar Marine Park, renowned for its vibrant underwater life. After a luxury picnic, unwind with wellness experiences such as a massage or meditation, try paddle boarding and snorkelling or stride off on an island walk. Returning to the train, an evening of lively celebrations with local entertainers awaits in the Piano Bar Car, accompanied by a delicious dinner.      


Day 3 - Langkawi to Penang    


Today you arrive in Penang Island, Malaysia’s cultural melting pot, where you have a choice of excursions:


1) Discover the culinary art of Peranakan cooking, where you will visit a spice shop and traditional grocery stores to purchase herbs and vegetables, before trying your hand at making some enticing local dishes. 


2) Head to Georgetown Old Quarter to see stunning temples, a contemporary studio and an opera and puppet house. 


3) Choose to explore independently. Armed with a map, a tri-shaw and a driver, navigate Georgetown’s picturesque streets at your own pace. 


Re-join the train at Butterworth for lunch and a leisurely afternoon on board. A final celebratory evening beckons with irresistible cuisine, entertainment, and company.


Day 4 - Penang to Singapore      


Enjoy breakfast in your cabin or the Dining Car as you travel through the southernmost state of Johor, known for its beaches and rainforest. Soon afterwards, the train crosses the strait to Singapore, where you disembark with your magical memories.  


 

Wild Malaysia

Route: Singapore – Taman Negara – Kuala Lumpur – Penang - Singapore


Duration: 4 Days/3 Nights


When: March to May, July to October


 

Day 1 - Singapore to Taman Negara      


Board the famous carriages of the Eastern & Oriental Express at Woodlands Station, Singapore. Admire the lush landscape before enjoying a healthy afternoon tea in your cabin. Soon, evening falls and it’s time to dress for dinner in the Dining Car. Indulge in luxury dining before the engaging onboard entertainment starts.      


Day 2 - Taman Negara to Kuala Lumpur      


After breakfast in your cabin, admire the views of the Jungle Line as the train courses through some of the wildest parts of Malaysia. Following lunch on board, you arrive at Merapoh station and alight for an extraordinary experience; learning about the Malayan tiger (proudly displayed on the E&O emblem). Discover the “tiger territory” of Taman Negara National Park, meeting local villagers and organisations who are working on the ground to protect this noble, critically endangered wild cat and its habitat. The dense jungle, wide rivers and lush mountains are home to wildlife ranging from water buffalo to macaques, tapirs to hornbills – a true explorer’s paradise. Returning to the train, a lively evening with local entertainment awaits in the Piano Bar Car, preceded by a delicious dinner.


Day 3 - Kuala Lumpur to Penang      


Enjoy breakfast and lunch on board, before alighting for the crossing to Penang Island. Choose from any of the following local excursions:
