Experiencing a Cruise Holiday as a Solo Traveller

Solo cruising is one of the most rewarding ways to see the world, especially for those looking to combine adventure, solitude and socialising on your terms. Whether you’re stepping on board for the first time or you are a seasoned solo traveller, a cruise holiday offers a structured yet relaxed way to explore multiple destinations without the usual solo travel logistics of packing, unpacking and transfers.

Read on to discover why sailing solo is on the rise and why a cruise holiday might just be the answer for your next solo adventure.

What to Expect

A typical day on a cruise as a solo traveller can vary. Mornings might begin with a coffee on deck, fresh sea air and a good book, or perhaps a gentle fitness class followed by a delicious buffet breakfast. Days in port are your chance to dive into excursions tailored to a range of interests: guided walks through historic towns, food and wine tours, wildlife experiences or cycling through scenic countryside. Many solo cruisers talk about the ease of joining a group excursion, being a natural way to connect with fellow explorers without any pressure.

Evenings onboard are equally diverse. There are formal dining rooms, casual buffet options and specialty restaurants for those who want something a bit more refined. Tables are often mixed party, meaning you might find yourself swapping stories with other guests from the days events.

One of the appealing aspects of solo cruising is choice. If you want to join group activities such as quizzes, dance classes, themed dinners or shore excursions, they’re there. If you prefer quiet time with a book or a spa visit, that choice is respected too. Some cruise lines offer introductory events for all solo travellers on board to meet at the start of the cruise.

Our Most Solo Friendly Cruise Partners

A cruise line that is often mentioned from experienced solo cruisers is Fred Olsen. With a reputation in the industry for being the best for solo guests, Fred Olsen tends to offer a range of thoughtfully located single cabins and regular solo traveller events on board.

Solo cruisers are increasingly well catered for across a huge range of cruise lines to cover all styles and destinations. Riviera Travel, for example, is set to launch a dedicated solo only ship for European river cruising, creating a ready made community on board. Meanwhile, Ponant offers more than 100 sailings with no solo supplement, making its small ship luxury voyages far more accessible for single travellers. Other cruise lines will offer reduced single supplements across a range of destinations, such as Silversea for ultra luxurious or expedition cruises or for something a little different, Star Clippers with their beautiful tall ships, combining the romance of traditional sailing with modern comfort.

Why Go?

Ultimately, solo cruising blends independence and connection, giving you the freedom to shape each day exactly as you wish. For travellers seeking adventure, comfort and a ready made community at sea, it’s a rewarding way to discover the world on your own terms.
