I visited San Ignacio (Cayo District), Placencia and San Pedro (Ambergris Caye), therefore covering a variety of landscapes and sights and all in all a wonderful introduction to this hidden Central American gem.

I visited a number of resorts and hotels during my short time in Belize. One of Belize’s many attractions is the ease in which you can go from staying in stunning lodges within the remote jungle such as Blancaneux Lodge (owned by esteemed flm director Francis Ford Coppola) one week, to easily transitioning to staying in luxurious beach resorts in Placencia such as Turtle Inn the next.

For me, the main draw of Belize is its cultural heritage, varied wildlife, glorious beaches combined with a plethora of attractions on offer and a wonderful year-round warm weather climate. 

Mexico often receives the top honours when it comes to visitors wanting to experience Maya culture and explore attributed attractions. However, Belize’s incredible Caracol and Xunantunich sites are both easy day trips from San Ignacio, and despite being Belize’s most visited attractions, these are still tranquil spots that feel a world away from the throngs of tourists that visit most of Mexico’s Maya sites. 

As well as boasting the second largest barrier reef on the planet, home to manatees, whale sharks, turtles and rays, this incredible country also possesses the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife and Jaguar Reserve - the only jaguar sanctuary in the world! Combined with verdant rainforests with over 500 species of birds - Belize is a nature lover’s paradise.

As mentioned above, Belize is home to the second largest barrier reef on the planet. But unlike it’s Australian superior, Belize’s barrier reef is home to one of the world’s most magnificent natural sights, the Blue Hole. 

Many places have vibrant coral reefs to snorkel in, and many places have such clear waters and a kaleidoscope of tropical fish that diving makes for a magical experience. Not only does Belize possess these iconic qualities, but you also have the chance to experience a truly remarkable sight with the Blue Hole Flyover.  Soar above the shimmering waters of the Caribbean on an unforgettable scenic flight over the Blue Hole. Watch in awe as the turquoise sea transforms to a deep sapphire circle and enjoy a birds-eye view of this stunning natural phenomenon.

Belize is blessed with so much to see that just spending a week at either the beach or exploring Belize’s lush interior would not do this beguiling country justice. Of course, the beaches around Placencia are well worth spending some extended time after a tour, but spending time to witness Belize’s verdant central regions, learning about the country’s ancient civilisations and marvelling at it’s iconic wildlife is what makes this country so special.
