Auckland

Most travellers arrive into New Zealand in Auckland and there are loads of activities in Auckland for backpackers. There’s a great nightlife scene where you can meet other travellers, from the Wynyard Quarter to the dive bars of K Road and Ponsonby’s chic cafes. A lot of tours start from here as well, including some great Kiwi Experience tours.

Rotorua

One of North Island’s main hubs for backpackers is Rotorua which has so many great activities to choose from, you’ll be hanging out here for weeks. Whether you want to see the hot springs, see a haka, spot some kiwis (the birdlife of course!), or do some incredible ziplining, you will find incredible experiences here. Of course, Hobbiton is only a short way from here as well, so make sure you visit as part of your adventure.

Taupō

Another great place to be based in New Zealand as a backpacker is the town of Taupō, based on the great Lake Taupō, which has everything you could want in a backpacker town. Bungee jumping close to Huka Falls, jetboating, skydiving and a fun hostel scene all make Taupō a key stop on the backpacker route. Close by as well is the famous Tongariro Track – one of New Zealand’s Great Walks.

Franz Josef

Backpackers who love immersion in nature will love the mountain village of Franz Josef which is nestled in the foothills below the mighty Franz Josef glacier. The glacier is actually viewable from the village streets! Head to the skies and strap on some ice shoes to walk the icy glacier, and the rainforest nearby is home to some great river kayaking and beautiful scenic walks.

Queenstown

The ultimate backpacker destination in New Zealand is Queenstown. Never will you see a place more beautiful, with more activities, more bars and hostels and more fun to be had. Check in to your Queenstown hostel, meet some like-minded travellers and you will quickly find that the days turn to weeks as you work your way through the bungee jumps, mountain biking and paragliding. This is before you make the journey out to Milford Sound or to one of the famous Great Walks in the area – Routeburn Track or Kepler Track anyone?
