No visit to San Francisco is complete without taking in the iconic grandeur of the Golden Gate Bridge. You can walk, bike, or drive across the 1.7 mile bridge and enjoy breathtaking views of the bay and the city skyline. For the best views and photo opportunities, head to Battery Spencer on the Marin County side of the bridge, or to Crissy Field in Presidio.
Step back in time with a visit to Alcatraz Island, home to the infamous federal prison that once held notorious criminals such as Al Capone. The ferry ride from Pier 33 offers fantastic views of the bay, and the guided audio tour provides a chilling insight into the lives of the inmates and the guards.
Top tip: make sure you book your Alcatraz tickets in advance, as they sell out quick!
Larger than New York’s Central Park, Golden Gate Park is a green oasis in the heart of the city. Highlights include the De Young Museum, the California Academy of Sciences, the Conservatory of Flowers, and the serene Japanese Tea Gardens. Rent a paddleboat on Stow Lake or simply relax on the lush, green lawns.
San Francisco’s Chinatown is the largest and oldest in the whole of North America. Wander through the vibrant streets, sample authentic dim sum at the celebrated Good Mong Kok bakery, and shop for unique gifts and souvenirs. Don’t miss the Golden Gate Fortune Cookie Factory where you can see fortune cookies being made fresh in front of you!
Hop on board one of San Francisco’s historic cable cars for a quintessential city experience. The Powell-Hyde line offers dramatic views of the bay as it climbs the city’s steep hills. It’s a fun and nostalgic way to explore neighbourhoods such as Fisherman’s Wharf, Nob Hill and Union Square.
While touristy, Fisherman’s Wharf is a must-see in San Francisco for its lively atmosphere. Check out the resident sealions lounging on Pier 39, enjoy fresh clam chowder served in sourdough bread bowls, and visit the excellent Aquarium of the Bay. From here you can also book bay cruises for spectacular waterfront views.
For panoramic views of San Francisco, make your way to Twin Peaks, located in the geographical centre of the city. The two hills offer a 360-degree vantage point of the city, the bay and beyond. Sunset is a particularly magical time to visit, but bring some layers as it can get pretty windy at the top.
The Mission District is a hub of culture, food and art. Admire the colourful murals of the Clarion Alley Mural Project, indulge in a delicious burrito from La Taqueria, and explore the areas many boutique shops and cafes. Dolores Park, with its lively crowd and fabulous city views, is a great spot to unwind and soak up the atmosphere.
Fans of the TV show Full House will recognise the Painted Ladies, a row of colourful Victorian homes at Alamo Square. While the houses themselves are not open to the public, the park across the street provides the perfect vantage point for photographs.
San Francisco is full of surprises! Visit the Wave Organ, a unique sound sculpture near the Marina. Seek out the 16th Avenue Tiles Steps, a mosaic staircase that leads to stunning views. Explore Lands End Trail, a coastal path offering dramatic cliffs and ruins of the Sutro Baths. Or visit Lombard Street, known as the ‘Crookedest Steet in the World’, and is one of the city’s most scenic streets.
San Francisco is a foodie’s paradise. From Michelin-starred restaurants to simple food trucks, the city offers something for every palate. Don’t miss:
• Tartine Bakery for incredible pastries
• Zuni Café for its famous roast chicken
• The Ferry Building Marketplace for artisanal eats and delicious local wines
For drinks, check out rooftop bars such as El Techno or the speakeasy vibes of Bourbon & Branch.
Just a short drive or bus ride from the centre of the city, Muir Woods National Monument is home to towering coastal redwoods. Walk amongst these ancient giants and enjoy a serene break from urban life.
Take a look at our Muir Woods & San Francisco 2 Day Hop-On Hop-Off Bus Tour to add this onto your holiday. There’s also the option to include your Alcatraz entry as part of this ticket.
The bohemian Haight-Ashbury neighbourhood is synonymous with the 1960’s counterculture movement. Known as the birthplace of the Summer of Love, it’s a must-visit for history buffs and music lovers. Stroll down Haight Street to explore vintage shops, record stores like Amoeba Music, and eclectic cafes. For a dose of history, check out the former homes of icons like Janis Joplin and the Grateful Dead. Nearby Buena Vista Park offers a peaceful retreat and stunning views of the city.
