Solo travel hits differently in a city. There’s no pressure to fill every hour, no compromise on plans, and no guilt about spending an entire afternoon wandering aimlessly or sitting in a café people-watching. The best cities for solo travel make this kind of freedom feel natural; they’re walkable, safe, social when you want them to be, and full of moments that don’t require company to enjoy.

Whether you’re taking your first solo trip or just carving out a long weekend for yourself, these are some of the best city breaks for solo travellers, chosen for their ease, atmosphere, and ability to make you feel comfortably anonymous – but never lonely!

Lisbon, Portugal

Lisbon is one of those cities that welcomes solo travellers without trying too hard. It’s compact, affordable by Western European standards, and full of casual spots where eating alone feels completely normal. Trams rattle up steep streets, miradouros (viewpoints) appear unexpectedly, and there’s always a bakery nearby if plans go awry!

English is widely spoken, public transport is straightforward, and the city feels lively without feeling overwhelming.

Why Lisbon is great for a solo city break:

• Safe and walkable neighbourhoods

• Plenty of low-pressure social spaces

• Ideal for slow exploration

Tokyo, Japan

Tokyo might seem intimidating at first, but it’s one of the easiest cities in the world to navigate alone. Everything runs on time, signage is clear, and solo dining isn’t just accepted, it’s built into the culture. From ramen counters to capsule cafés, being alone feels entirely normal here.

Despite its size, Tokyo feels remarkably safe, even late a night, which makes spontaneous wandering feel stress-free.

Why Tokyo is great for a solo city break:

• Exceptionally safe and efficient

• Designed for independent travellers

• Endless things to do without needing company

Barcelona, Spain

Barcelona strikes a rare balance: it’s vibrant without being chaotic. You can fill a weekend with architecture, markets, beaches and late dinners, all within a manageable area. Solo travellers often find it easy to dip in and out of social experiences – group tours, shared tapas tables, or casual conversations at wine bars.

It’s also a city where lingering is encouraged. Sitting alone with a drink rarely feels out of place.

• Strong café and street culture

• Easy to meet people organically

• Great mix of sightseeing and downtime
