When autumn rolls in, spooky season takes hold, and Halloween offers the perfect excuse for a themed getaway! Whether you crave gothic castles, lively parades, or full-on fright fests – take a look at our guide to the best Halloween destinations around the world… if you’re brave enough...

Transylvania, Romania

It wouldn’t be a Halloween list without including Transylvania – the home of Count Dracula and location of some of Europe’s most atmospheric landscapes. Bran Castle, often linked to Bram Stoker’s legend, hosts themed parties and night tours that blend history, horror and fun. The nearby town of Brasov has medieval streets, candlelit pubs and haunting folklore that makes it feel as though you’ve stepped inside a gothic novel.

Don’t miss: The annual Halloween Party at Bran Castle, complete with costumes, live DJs and eerie performances.

Best for: Gothic romantics, history lovers, and anyone who wants an authentic ‘Dracula’ Halloween!

Bran's Castle, Romania

Prague, Czech Republic

Prague’s cobbled streets, shadowy alleys and gothic spires make it one of Europe’s most atmospheric Halloween destinations. The city’s old legends – from haunted bridges to mysterious alchemists – come to life with ghost tours and candlelit walks through the Old Town.

Bars and clubs host Halloween parties with a distinctly Eastern European edge, while Prague Castle and the Old Jewish Cemetery provide the eerie backdrop for quieter moments of reflection.

Don’t miss: The Ghosts and Legends tour of the Old Town for tales of medieval spirits and dark secrets.

Best for: Culture lovers, couples, and those looking for something spooky yet sophisticated.

Charles Bridge, Prague, Czech Republic

Copenhagen, Denmark

For those who prefer whimsical Halloween to horror, Copenhagen transforms into a storybook each October. Tivoli Gardens, the world’s second oldest amusement park, is covered in thousands of pumpkins, lights and autumn displays. Expect themed rides, performances, and just the right level of spooky for families.

Elsewhere, the Copenhagen Ghost Walk and atmospheric canals give adults a more haunting experience.

Don’t miss: Tivoli’s Halloween Festival – open throughout October with pumpkin carving, parades and fireworks displays.

Best for: Families, couples, and travellers who prefer festive charms over jump scares.

Nyhavn New Harbour, Copenhagen

New Orleans, USA

New Orleans is THE Halloween capital of America; a city that embraces the macabre year-round. Its French Quarter oozes gothic charm, from voodoo shops to candlelit jazz bars. October brings Krewe of BOO!, the city’s famous Halloween parade, and ghost tours that explore haunted mansions and mysterious cemetery’s.

The traditions blend the city’s Creole and voodoo traditions with live music, extravagant costumes, making it as much about celebrations as scares.

Don’t miss: The Anne Rice Vampire Ball and Crewe of BOO! Parade for the ultimate gothic party.

Best for: Nightlife lovers, culture seekers, and those who want Halloween with rhythm and flair!

Mexico City, Mexico

Halloween flows naturally into Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) celebrations in Mexico, a vibrant, spiritual and beautiful festival honouring the departed. Streets fill with colour, candles and calaveras (skulls), while families build ornate altars and dress in traditional costumes.

Mexico City hosts grand parades, but smaller towns like Oaxaca and San Andrés Mixquic offer a more authentic experience with candlelit cemeteries and local processions.

Don’t miss: The Mexico City Día de los Muertos Parade – a riot of colour, dance, and tradition inspired by ancient Aztec beliefs.

Best for: Culture enthusiasts, photographers, and anyone seeking a heartfelt alternative to Halloween.

Day of the Dead, Mexico

Tokyo, Japan

Tokyo’s take on Halloween is pure spectacle – creative, colourful and uniquely Japanese. The Shibuya Halloween Street Party draws thousands in elaborate costumes, while theme parks like Tokyo Disneyland and DisneySea run Halloween events in September and October.

For a taste of old Japan, visit temples during Obon-inspired events honouring spirits, blending modern cosplay with centuries-old ghost traditions.

Don’t miss: Tokyo Disney’s Halloween, packed with themed rides, food and parades.

Best for: Cosplayers, pop-culture fans, and travellers looking for a playful, high-energy Halloween abroad.
