Love a walking tour of a city? Enjoy actors donning costumes to re-enact historical events? Then this famous trail is for you! The Freedom Trail is a two and a half mile walk past some of the most famous historical landmarks in Boston, a city that has more sites connected to the American Revolution than any other in America.
This is a great introduction and one of the best things to do in Boston to get a real sense of the history of the city. Visit Boston Common, the Benjamin Franklin Statue, the Old State House and Paul Revere's House to name just a few of the 16 sites visited on this trail.
You'll also work up an appetite so have an excuse to pop into Faneuil Hall for refreshments as you walk past!
This big expanse of green in the city centre is the oldest city park in the US dating back to 1634. A place of speeches (Martin Luther King and Charles Lindburgh), bandstands and statues, the Common is a great place to experience history in the city. Have a wander round and enjoy the scenery and in the winter, there’s even an ice rink!
Home of the famous Boston Tea Party where, in December 1773, the Americans dumped barrels of tea into the harbour to protest a tea tax the British were imposing, this is a beautiful harbour right in the heart of the city. From here you can visit a tall ship, the USS Constitution and learn more about the Tea Party, a great day out for adults and kids alike, and it's also the jumping off point for whale watching cruises.
Faneuil Hall started life as a marketplace back in 1742 and it still has a real sense of history about it, having long been used as a place for people to buy and sell their wares. Nearby Quincy Market is a great place to stop for a famous Bostonian lobster roll whilst absorbing the history. You can really feel what it would have been like to be alive in Boston back in the day. This is one of the best things to do in Boston for lovers of history and food.
Just over the Charles River in Cambridge, Harvard is well worth a visit. Arguably the most famous university in America with a host of famous Alumni including past American presidents (Teddy Roosevelt, JFK and Barak Obama), celebrities like Matt Damon and business giants like Bill Gates. It's also the filming location of the movie Good Will Hunting, and where Mark Zuckerburg came up with the idea for Facebook!
It has a beautiful campus with some lovely buildings, but really all most of us want to do is walk around and imagine what it might be like to study there. Posing for a picture by the Harvard University Sign is as close as most of us get! Over this side of the river there are also lots of great little local cafes and bookstores that you can easily while away some time in.
If you're any kind of a sports fan or just interested in American culture, then don't miss Fenway Park. Home of the Boston Red Sox and the oldest baseball stadium in continuous use in America, a visit here gives you the chance hear about iconic stars like Babe Ruth, sing the National Anthem or just order a hot dog and soak up the atmosphere. Definitely the best thing to do in Boston for sports lovers!
Finally, no trip to Boston would be complete without a visit to this bar made famous by the long running sitcom Cheers! Have your photo taken outside the bar or go in and see some of the actual film set. Alas not everyone knew my name, but as one of the America's best loved American sitcoms, a visit here is a fascinating insight into popular culture.
