Best Things to Do in Verona

Author Image

By Lucy

Known as the ‘City of Love’, Verona is famed as the setting of the star-crossed lovers in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. But beyond the legend, there is far more to this enchanting city – so much so it has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Easy to explore with a compact and mostly pedestrianised historic centre and filled with well-preserved ruins, gaining it a further nickname of ‘Little Rome’ – there is a wealth to see and do here. Think of romantic, cobbled streets, characterful buildings and delicious food served in welcoming osterias (a small and casual Italian tavern or wine bar). Read below for some of our top suggestions for the best things to do in Verona.

Discover charming piazzas

The beating heart of an Italian city is found in its enchanting squares. These sociable hubs are loved by the locals and tourists alike in Verona, where they can come together for a delicious meal and drink or to shop at the market stalls. The most popular are Piazza Bra, Piazza delle Erbe and Piazza dei Signori.

Visit Verona Arena

Built in 30AD, this magnificent arena is the third largest and best preserved Roman amphitheatre in Italy, and is one of the best things to do in Verona. Perhaps explore the site during the day or catch an evening concert to experience it at its atmospheric best.

Climb Lamberti Tower

Set in the central Piazza delle Erbe, this 12th Century tower remains the tallest building in Verona at 84m and offers incredible panoramic views over the city. Opt to climb the 368 steps to the top or take the lift that can take you most of the way, with a final set of stairs at the end.

Watch a sunset at Castle San Pietro Viewpoint

Just a 15 minute uphill walk, or a handy funicular ride away, is a popular viewpoint at Castel San Pietro where you can soak up beautiful panoramas over the city. For truly magical views, why not head up before sunset to watch the orange hues wash over the city.

Sample local cuisine

Filled with a great number of delicious restaurants, there is no shortage of choice to savour a tasty bite – from cosy wine bars to elegant osterias tucked away in quieter alleys. Delight in authentic, handmade pasta, slow cooked meats and Amarone wine (a red local wine). This wine makes up one of the city’s most recognised dishes, Risotto all’Amarone – a must try while you’re in Verona.

Visit Casa di Giulietta

Famed for its association with Shakespeare’s wondrous tale, no visit to Verona would be complete without stopping to see Juliet’s house. It is free to enter the charming courtyard and see Juliet’s statue and balcony. There is a fee should you wish to step inside to stand on the balcony.

Dive into history

With the Adige River winding its way around the city, there are a collection of ancient bridges connecting the rest of the city with its historic centre. Whether you’re a history buff or simply wish to admire the views that can be captured along them, these bridges offer an interesting way to get across the city. The city also boasts a number of fascinating museums and churches to admire.

- Ponte Pietra – the oldest bridge in Verona, built by the Romans in 100AD. The original bridge was blown up in WW2, so what remains now is a fascinating mosaic of Roman bricks and the reconstructed brickwork layered on after. It connects the centre with the Roman Theatre (not to be mixed up with the amphitheatre) and Castel San Pietro.

- Castelvecchio – a unique, fortified bridge, connecting the medieval castle (which houses a museum) with Verona’s left bank. Built so the ruling family could escape should the empire fall, this bridge was an architectural marvel for its time and remains a popular attraction.

- Archaeological Museum – Located next to the 1st Century Roman Theatre, it displays impressive Roman mosaics and artifacts.

- Basilica of San Zeno Maggiore – a masterpiece of Romanesque architecture, its glorious interiors are well preserved and are a must see during your time here.
