Madagascar doesn’t follow a simple summer/winter cycle like Europe. Because of its size and varied topography (highlands, rainforests, dry south and west), you’ll encounter different conditions depending on where you go, and there’s therefore no best time to visit Madagascar. 

• The dry season is broadly May to October.

• The rainy season runs from November to March/April, with higher humidity, heavy rainfall in the east, and a risk of cyclones. 

• Some regions remain accessible year-round (especially in the south and west) because the climate is semi-arid.

Wildlife spotting: Many of Madagascar’s endemic animals (lemurs, reptiles, birds) are most active during certain windows. For example, young lemurs are often seen between September and November, birds are breeding then, and reptiles are at their most prolific. 

Accessibility: In the rainy season, some roads and national parks become tricky or impassable, especially in the rainforest or remote areas. 

Beach and marine time: For snorkelling, whale watching and beach relaxation, you’ll want calm seas and good visibility. The dry season is the best time to visit Madagascar for that. 

Crowds and cost: Peak months often mean higher prices and more visitors in the key parks. Shoulder seasons give a bit more space.

Wildlife and nature immersion: For seeing animals at their most active, September to November is the best time to visit Madagascar. The weather is good, baby lemurs are around, reptiles and frogs appear, and birds are nesting. If you’re a really keen wildlife lover, this time of year is probably your best bet! 

Hiking, trekking and exploring remote landscapes: The dry season, May to October, especially June to September, offers more stable trails, less mud, and fewer storms. The highlands can be cooler at night so pack accordingly. 

Beach time and marine adventures: If you’re heading to the coast, then aim for the dry months. Late April to December are good times to visit Madagascar for the beach, and the best snorkelling months are May to October.

January to March: This is peak rainy and cyclone season on much of Madagascar, especially on the east coast and in the north. Roads get washed out, some parks close and accessibility drops.

Late November into early December: This is the transition into Madagascar’s rainy season. It can still be a good time to visit Madagascar if you stay in less exposed regions (west/south).

• Even in the dry season, sudden rain showers are possible (especially in rainforests). Be sure to pack a lightweight rain jacket. 

• Nights can be cool in the highlands (10°C or lower in some areas) – don’t assume that tropical always means hot! 

• Roads might be rough or slow. Leave some extra travel time between destinations. Some remote places might be tricky if you choose the wetter months.

Is there ever a bad time to visit Madagascar?

It’s never completely off-limits, but some periods pose more risk (heavy rains, cyclones, inaccessible roads). 

What about travelling to Madagascar in December? 

December marks the start of Madagascar’s rainy season. Some areas are still good, especially the drier west and south, but east coast rainforest hikes are unlikely at this time of the year. 

I want to see baby lemurs! When is the best time to visit? 

Look at September to November, when many species breed and young lemurs are active. 

Is beach and snorkelling time best in the dry season? 

Yes. For calm seas, good visibility and fewer storms, Madagascar’s dry months of May to October are ideal for beaches and marine activities.
