Nepal, a land of breathtaking mountains, ancient temples and an enchanting local culture, is a year-round destination for travellers seeking adventure, spirituality and natural beauty. However, your experience in Nepal can vary depending on what time of the year you decide to visit!

Read on for our guide to the best time to visit Nepal, to help you to make the most of your trip in this Himalayan paradise.

Seasons in Nepal

Nepal experiences four distinct seasons:

• Spring (March to May)

• Summer/Monsoon (June to August)

• Autumn (September to November)

• Winter (December to February)

Each season offers unique experiences, and the best time to visit Nepal will depend on the type of activities you plan to partake in.

Spring (March to May)

Spring is one of the most popular times to visit Nepal, especially for trekkers and nature lovers. During this season:

Weather: The days are warm and pleasant, with average temperatures ranging from 16⁰C to 23⁰C in the valleys, with cooler temperatures in the mountains.

Trekking: Trails like the Everest Base Camp and Annapurna Circuit are full of activity. The rhododendron forests bloom in vibrant shades of red, pink and white, adding magnificent colours to the landscape.

Festivals: The colourful Holi festival and Buddha Jayanti are celebrated during this time.

Why visit? Perfect weather for trekking, stunning natural beauty, and vibrant cultural experiences.

Summer/Monsoon (June to August)

The monsoon season brings heavy rainfall to most parts of Nepal. While this may deter most travellers, this season still has its charms.

Weather: The temperature ranges from 20⁰C to 30⁰C, but frequent rains can sometimes make travel challenging.

Trekking: While the trails in the mountains are slippery and prone to landslides, areas in the rain shadow (such as the Mustang District) remain dry and accessible.

Nature: The countryside is lush and green, with terraced fields and waterfalls at their most beautiful.

Why visit: This is the ideal time for exploring Nepal’s rain-shadow regions and experiencing the dramatic monsoon landscape.

Autumn (September to November)

Autumn is widely regarded as the best time to visit Nepal. This season offers:

Weather: Clear skies, mild temperatures (15⁰C to 24⁰C), and little to no rainfall make it the ideal time for outdoor activities.

Trekking: The trails are at their best, offering spectacular views of snow-capped peaks. Popular treks, including Everest Base Camp and Annapurna, are in full swing.

Festivals: Dashain and Tihar, Nepal’s biggest festivals, take place during this season, offering a glimpse into the country’s rich cultural heritage.

Why visit? Ideal weather, stunning mountain views and vibrant festivals make this Nepal’s peak tourist season.

Winter (December to February)

Winter in Nepal is a quieter season, but it has its own appeal for those seeking peacefulness and adventure.

Weather: Temperatures range from 9⁰C to 15⁰C in the lowlands, while the mountains can experience sub-zero temperatures.

Trekking: Lower altitude treks like Ghorepani Poon Hill and cultural tours in Kathmandu, Pokhara and Chitwan are ideal at this time of the year. High altitude treks are much more challenging but offer unparalleled solitude.

Wildlife: Chitwan National Park is an excellent area for a wildlife safari, with a better chance of spotting the animals due to the dry season.

Why visit? Peaceful trails, clear mountain views and great opportunities for wildlife spotting.
