Rwanda has a temperate tropical climate, meaning that it’s generally mild throughout the year with no extreme temperatures. Instead of four seasons, Rwanda has two dry seasons and two rainy seasons:
Rwanda’s Dry Seasons:
• June to September
• December to February
Rwanda’s Rainy Seasons:
• March to May (long rains)
• October to November (short rains)
Temperatures typically range between 16°C – 27°C, depending on the altitude, with cooler conditions in mountainous areas such as Volcanos National Park.
For most travellers, the best time to visit Rwanda is during the long, dry season from June to September. During these months, you can expect:
• Clearer skies and lower rainfall
• Easier hiking and wildlife viewing opportunities
• Excellent visibility in national parks
• Peak conditions for gorilla trekking and safaris
This period is also Rwanda’s busiest tourism season, so accommodation, tours and gorilla permits should be booked well in advance.
The short dry season from December to February is another great option, offering good weather with fewer crowds and lush green landscapes following the rains.
Seeing mountain gorillas in the wild is Rwanda’s signature experience, and timing matters!
The Best Months for Gorilla Trekking
The best time to see gorillas in Rwanda is during the dry season, especially:
• June to September (the best time overall)
• December to February (an excellent alternative)
During these months, forest trails in Volcanoes National Park are drier and less slippery, making gorilla treks easier and more enjoyable. The gorillas are also easier to track as they tend to stay at lower elevations.
Gorilla Trekking in the Rainy Season
Gorilla trekking is available year-round, even in the rainy season. While conditions can be muddier and the treks more challenging, there are benefits:
• Fewer tourists
• Lush, photogenic scenery
• Greater permit availability
For experienced hikers and travellers on a flexible budget, March, April and May can also be rewarding times to visit Rwanda for gorilla trekking – just be prepared for rain!
January to February: Dry, warm, excellent for gorillas.
March to May: Wet, green, fewer crowds, challenging treks.
June to September: Peak season, best weather, top wildlife viewing.
October to November: Short rains, good value, still good trekking.
December: Dry, festive, great travel conditions.
