Rwanda Holidays

The small landlocked country of Rwanda boasts one of the world's biggest wildlife experiences - the chance to see endangered mountain gorillas. Part of the great Virunga Mountain Range, the dense forests of the beautiful Volcanoes National Park are renowned as one of the last remaining habitats of these great apes.

Although most visitors come to see the gorillas, Rwanda has so much more to offer besides with spectacular mountain scenery, a thriving capital and friendly people. The vast rainforest of Nyungwe Forest National Park has incredible biodiversity and is home to a large population of chimpanzees, while the shores of serene Lake Kivu feature sandy beaches and fishing villages.

The genocide of 1994 looms large in Rwanda's modern history, but the country has since united to become the peaceful optimistic place that it is today. A visit to Kigali's Genocide Memorial is worthwhile to learn about the events of this horrific period.

  • WHERE TO GO IN RWANDA

    Rwanda & Uganda map
    Volcanoes National Park
Part of the great Virunga Mountain Range which comprises 8 ancient volcanoes, this stunningly beautiful national park is the home of Rwanda’s mountain gorillas. With around 10 habituated gorilla groups of up to 33 members, the park offers the opportunity for productive sightings. Sitting at an altitude of over 2,000m, treks here can be steep and tiring and in the dry season (Jun - Sep & Dec - Feb) gorillas tend to climb higher.
    Nyungwe Forest National Park
This vast mountainous rainforest is renowned for its incredible biodiversity with 13 species of primates and over 300 species of birds. Boasting a large population of habituated chimpanzees, it’s a great place to see these amazing creatures. Other notable species include the Ruwenzori colobus and L’Hoest’s monkey, while towering mahogany and ebony trees, orchids and butterflies are abundant.
    Kigali
Located in the heart of the country and surrounded by lush valleys and hills, Kigali, Rwanda’s capital, is a rapidly growing city with coffee shops and cosmopolitan cafés, lively traditional markets and a number of interesting museums. The city's Genocide Memorial is worth a visit to learn about the events of this horrific period of Rwanda's history.
    Lake Kivu
Lake Kivu lies on the border between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, nestled in a valley and surrounded by steep green terraced hills. With white sandy shores, shady bays and small fishing villages to explore, the picturesque lake provides the ideal setting for a relaxing break.
    Akagera National Park
Rwanda's only national park for traditional Big 5 safaris, little known Akagera sits on Rwanda's eastern border with Tanzania and features diverse landscapes of savannah plains, lakes and wetlands. This pretty park is home to a wealth of wildlife including black rhinos, hippos, giraffe and a variety of antelopes.
