Summer is when the Dolomites feel most alive. Trails are open, cable cars are running, lakes are shimmering in the sunshine and terraces fill with travellers soaking up the views. It’s the best time to visit for hiking, photography, scenic drives and first-time visits.
Great areas to stay in summer:
• Val Gardena: One of the easiest bases for accessing famous hiking paths and viewpoints.
• Cortina d’Ampezzo: A vibrant alpine town with plenty of restaurants, hotels and nearby highlights.
• Misurina with views towards Tre Cime di Lavaredo: Perfect for admiring the Dolomites iconic scenery.
Top tip: Get out the door early in the morning to discover quieter trails, softer light and far better photo opportunities.
Autumn brings a slower pace and a softer feel to the Dolomites. Forests turn golden, the light becomes warmer, and villages feel more relaxed once the peak summer crowds have gone.
Areas that shine in autumn:
• Alpe di Siusi (Seiser Alm): Wide open meadows framed by dramatic peaks, especially photogenic this time of year.
• Ortisei: A picturesque alpine village with colourful buildings, beautiful valley views and easy access to hikes.
• Bolzano: A charming town, known for being a gateway to the Dolomites region, boasting a great mix of food, culture and easy transport links.
Top tip: Aim for late September or very early October for the best balance of colour, weather and accessibility.
Winter turns the Dolomites into a winter wonderland. Snow-covered peaks, festive villages, glowing lights and excellent skiing make this the best time to visit the Dolomites for active winter holidays. Even non-skiers often come simply for the scenery, spa hotels and cosy alpine atmosphere.
Popular winter bases:
• Cortina d’Ampezzo: A stylish, lively and internationally known ski resort.
• Val Gardena or Alta Badia: Fantastic access to the wider Dolomiti Superski network.
• Canazei: Strong ski links and scenic surroundings, often better value than the larger resorts.
Top tip: January and early March often offer the sweet spot - great snow, fewer crowds and better prices.
Spring is the Dolomites’ reset season. It’s quieter, often more affordable, and an ideal time to visit for travellers who prefer a slower pace. Higher elevated trails may still be closed, but lower valleys begin to bloom and towns feel refreshingly uncrowded.
Good spring bases:
• Bressanone (near the Dolomites): A lovely historic town with easy access to nearby valleys.
• South Tyrol valley villages: Peaceful, scenic and relaxed.
Top tip: Think relaxation over activity as scenic drives, good food and gentle exploration work best for visiting during this season.
Whatever time of year you choose to visit, the Dolomites rarely disappoint! Summer delivers lively activities and accessibility, autumn offers calm beauty, winter brings classic alpine charm, and spring is a great time for relaxation before peak travel returns.
