We began our Azores itinerary with the largest Azore, Sao Miguel, a thrill-seeker’s paradise, which was right up my street. So obviously, venturing to the top of Sete Cidades on a quadbike followed by kayaking in the lakes was not only incredible, but coupled with viewing some sensational scenery made it a very memorable trip. The following day, during our whale watching tour we were lucky enough to spot numerous sperm whales and majestic dolphins which made my day!

On our descent to Faial, it was evident to see why it is nicknamed ‘the Blue Island’, due to the abundance of varying shades of blue hydrangeas bordering the roads and framing the fields. In my opinion, the most amazing place to see on this island was, without a doubt, Caldeira. Ensuring we were wearing suitable footwear, we hiked the 8km circuit around Caldeira and it was easy to see why this area was awarded an EDEN prize. Sadly, all photos I took just don’t do it justice.

Pico was a fascinating place, home to a multitude of successful vineyards and black lava fields. This island was where I had my favourite meal. The seafood stew we were given on our tour was delicious and I heartily recommend it to everyone! However, the most intriguing place for me was Gruta das Torres where you can find the longest lava tube in Portugal. With our torches in hand, we began the descent into darkness with our knowledgeable guide who relayed a lot of interesting facts about the caves and the island itself. Did you know that the highest point in Portugal is Pico Mountain?

We finished our Azores itinerary in Terceira with its verdurous landscapes, reminiscent of those from Lord of the Rings, and stayed in Angra do Heroísmo, a charming World Heritage town. Algar do Carvão was a unique experience as we were in the interior of the volcano, beautifully dotted with volcanic vents which opened out to more amazing surroundings.  For the history buffs out there, Monte Brasil Nature Reserve is a great place to visit, not only for its breathtaking panoramic views, but also to see the unused garrison and aircraft guns from World War II.

Having previously visited several island destinations I thought I knew what to expect, but instead the Azores showcased the epitome of magical natural landscapes where we escaped into the ethereal world of bubbling thermal waters, geysers of rising steam and picturesque turquoise waters fused with Portuguese history and culture. The range of outdoor activities ticked all the boxes for me, and I know I will be returning for a scuba diving trip.  Upon my return to the Azores, I will ensure I set aside three nights to spend in the historic city of Lisbon enroute.
