
Surely one of the most dramatic cities, Cape Town enjoys an enviable location perched on the shoulders of Table Mountain between the Atlantic and Indian Ocean.
From the trendy waterfront district to the sweeping penguin-patrolled beaches in the south, it’s no wonder Cape Town remains a firm favourite to all who visit. Activities here are in abundance and varied; from learning about the inspirational story of Nelson Mandela’s life on a Robben Island tour, to exciting whale watching trips. In terms of where to stay, If your preference is to reside amongst the lively waterside area then The Commodore is the place for you. Its location is just minutes from an abundance of shops, restaurants and entertainment venues. The spectacular Table Top mountain backdrop also looks more like a Hollywood film set than a thriving city making this spot my most recommended, and the perfect start to your Garden Route itinerary.
Drive just an hour east of Cape Town and you reach the Cape Winelands; vine-woven valleys slotted between dramatic mountain escarpments.
Whether you choose to stay in Stellenbosch or Franschhoek, this area is home to quaint boutique hotels and wine tasting experiences is this regions bread and butter.
A must do for this part of the world is the wine tram. This popular tour leisurely transports you between beautiful wine estates sampling fine wines paired with breathtaking scenery. Stroll through vineyards, take a cellar tour or simply savour a glass of wine!
From the Cape Winelands region take the scenic route to Oudtshoorn, driving through picture postcard open plains and journey through the captivating Du Toits Kloof Pass. Spend the afternoon visiting the fascinating Cango Caves and its spectacular limestone formations.
Set at the foot of the Swartberg Mountains, just a short drive from central Oudtshoorn, Altes Landhaus offers an excellent base to explore this picturesque region. Come morning join a meerkats safari tour and watch as these playful animals emerge from the burrows, soaking up their daily sun, whilst your local guide teaches the secrets behind their adorable behaviour.
On today’s journey south you will officially enter the Garden Route, a spectacular coastal drive with dramatic seascapes awaits you this morning. Admire quaint villages and a national park renowned for its lakes and natural lagoons in Wilderness. Drive just another 47km and you’ll reach Knysna, a stunning harbour side town boasting a charming presence, and the perfect first stop on the Garden Route itinerary.
Stay at Pezula Nature Retreat just 10 minutes from Knysna. Perched high on an clifftop, scenic Pezula enjoys a truly unique setting overlooking a nature reserve comprising of indigenous wild flora, diverse birdlife, and the pretty Knysna lagoon. This laidback retreat is ideal for both couples and families alike looking for a relaxing getaway. The hotel offers a host of leisure facilities and delectable dining, as well as a tranquil spa, golf course and putting green.
Once at 'Plet' you’ll be greeted by views of calm waters and be surrounded by some of the finiest beaches within South Africa. Spend time ambling the upmarket boutiques in town, the many wildlife sanctuaries on your doorstep or journey to Tsitsikamma National Park, home to an indigenous forest, deep river gorges and spectacular waterfalls. Be sure to leave time for nature hikes and even whale watching from July to November.
If you’re looking for somewhere luxurious to stay, The Old Rectory is an opulent haven just a few minutes from the heart of the town centre. Here you can enjoy a leisurely afternoon by the pool with a cocktail followed by alfresco dinning in the afternoon.
Much is said about spotting the Big Five and here you have a good chance to see all of them and more.
Amakhala is smaller than the other game reserves in the Eastern Cape, but it is no less as impressive. Its 7500 hectares means that it provides guests with intimate safari experiences that are filled with diversity and spectacular flora and fauna.
A personal favourite lodge within this region is Shamwari Long Lee Manor, located in the award-winning Shamwari Private Game Reserve, which prides itself on its ethical conservation efforts. Lee Manor is a restored Edwardian manor house built in 1910. Reminiscent of a bygone era, it overlooks the sweeping plains leading down to the Bushman’s River where you can watch for game. A perfect place to finish such an incredible holiday.
