In this series, we share recent experiences had by Trailfinders staff on their personal holidays. Whether it’s a unique place to stay or an interesting region to visit, you’ll get inspiration from those who have been.

This edition sees Holly Wallis discuss her recent trip to the Amalfi Coast.

Where?

The glistening Amalfi Coast, in southern Italy’s Campania region, is home to a beautiful stretch of lush, striking coastline on the Sorrentine peninsula. Charming, historic towns are scattered throughout the area, each with their own stunning sea vistas, beaches, piazzas and cliff-carved paths, dotted with botanical plants and lemon trees. Those that I visited included Sorrento, Positano, Amalfi Town, Furore and Praiano. With the Amalfi Coast being busier in the summer months, visiting in May, while a little cooler, meant I was able to enjoy uncrowded streets, quieter beaches and received instant service at restaurants and cafés. Travelling in the off-peak season meant I could properly enjoy the slower pace of life that Italians term ‘la dolce vita’ - absorbing the stories and glamour of the area while strolling down charming cobblestone alleyways.

Why go?

The incredible array of lush coastal scenery of the Amalfi Coast attracts visitors from around the globe seeking to make the most of the jaw-dropping views through hitting the hiking trails, journeying on dazzling boat trips, and swimming in the Tyrrhenian Sea. In addition to the beautiful nature of the region, those seeking cultural gems won’t be disappointed – these preserved, coastal towns are full of history and are often known for producing intricately made handicrafts, using skills honed across centuries. For instance, the Amalfi Coast is home to a town that is known for producing some of the finest ceramic tiles in the world – Vietri, and other villages are known for their paper and textile production.

There are some fabulous places to stay along the Amalfi Coast. I was truly amazed by the level of hospitality, service and design of hotels in this region of Italy. The range on offer in this region mean something to suit all tastes, budgets and location preferences. There were impressive views, with many featuring panoramic rooftop terraces, mouth-watering regional cuisine, lush, vibrant gardens and spacious, serene swimming pools.

Highlight?

Thanks to the predominantly limestone soils of the Amalfi Coast, the plentiful fresh citrus produce grown here has an extra juicy and aromatic taste. Pick an orange off the tree as you wander through the quaint, ancient streets of Sorrento, or treat yourself to a freshly squeezed glass of lemonade from one of the street-side stalls in Positano. The dishes offered at local restaurants incorporate fresh, local ingredients. One of my favourite meals in Sorrento was a lemon pasta dish which I enjoyed at Cucù restaurant just off Piazza Tasso, alongside a drink of freshly pressed orange juice. Seafood is also to die for in the Amalfi Coast region, with many restaurants and hotels serving up delicious fresh catch of the day.

Top tip?

A visit to the Amalfi Coast is often combined with a visit to Naples, which is the main gateway city to the area and a fantastic city to visit, filled with history and impressive architecture. Wander through Naples Duomo, meander down the gorgeous waterfront promenade and see the imposing Castel Nuovo. While there, be sure to sample Naples most famous dish – the delicious, thin-crust pizza. For one of the best, pop into the famed L’Antica Pizzeria Da Michele, situated in the historic centre, near the Duomo.
