Dreaming of the perfect romantic honeymoon? Look no further than the Maldives – a sun-drenched paradise of crystal-clear waters, overwater villas and private island luxury.

Read our ultimate guide to honeymoons in the Maldives for everything you need to know; from choosing the best time to visit to selecting the best resort for you. We’re here to help you plan the Maldives honeymoon of your dreams!

Choosing the Maldives

Whether you've been married two days or two years, it's never too late to head off on your perfect honeymoon....

There's nothing more memorable and special than planning a wedding but it can also be a busy and hectic time with a million and one things to organise. But once the speeches have been rehearsed, the photographer briefed and place names written, the next thing on your to do list should be where you will jet off to for your ultimate trip of a lifetime, also known as your HONEYMOON. This could easily be seen as one of the most exciting parts of getting married in my opinion (other than saying 'I do' to your one true love of course!)

Staring at a map to narrow down the endless array of amazing destinations our big wide world has to offer isn't an easy task but it's not a bad problem to be faced with and should definitely be enjoyable.

Whenever the word 'honeymoon' is mentioned, 'adventure', 'memorable', 'unforgettable' and 'mega' are likely to come to mind - so how do you ensure all of the above are ticked off?

There are likely to be lots of factors to consider first before fully committing and placing that pin on the map, like; how far do you want to travel? How long do you wish to go for? What will the weather be like? Do you have a budget in mind? Or do you want to visit more than one destination or island? Creating a shortlist, noting where you've been before and deciding on what's most important will all help you pick 'the one'.

If picture-postcard settings, breathtaking beaches, world-class hotels and stunning house reefs are some of the things you imagine when planning the most magical few weeks of you life then you may want to read on and discover why the teeny-tiny speckles of white sandy heaven scattered across the Indian Ocean will result in sending the rest of your pile of holiday brochures to the recycling quicker then you can say 'barefoot luxury'....

What's an Atoll?

Navigating a map trying to make sense of the multiple archipelagos that make up the paradise isles of the Maldives isn't considered an easy task. The Maldives is made up of over 20 natural atolls which can also be described as a ring-shaped coral reef. Some atolls are in the form of islands and some in the form of isolated reefs. When looking at an aerial view, it's clear to see their elongated pattern shapes the Maldives, spreading south after passing India and Sri Lanka, which all look particularly spectacular when viewed from above.

The 1,200 chain of islands and sandbanks are grouped in clusters, some of which (around 200) are inhabited and some so small they can't even be seen on a map. There are many mysteries about how they are formed and what factors determine their shape but their turquoise glow make the Maldives one of the most attractive places on earth - commonly described as 'heaven'.

Which Island?

Once you've realised you can't look past seaplanes, sandbanks and sun-drenched skies, your next move is deciding which paradise island(s) is most suited to making all your honeymoon dreams, which you've only ever been able to scroll past on Instagram until now, come true.

With over 1,200 islands to choose from, the swaying palm trees and glistening white sands alone are stunning enough to make anyone want to hop on a plane tomorrow. Each has something that will appeal to every kind of taste, wish and desire.

You might be looking for an island with activities, award winning cuisine, a chance to learn to dive or find your new favourite beach; whatever your Maldives bucket-list, you're sure to find the perfect honeymoon. Trailfinders have been whisking newlyweds off to the Maldives for almost 50 years, so here's a short list to make you want to start packing your flip-flops already...

Best Time to Visit

You may want to consider the weather when choosing the Maldives as your honeymoon, to ensure you enjoy all types of activities in the most ideal conditions.

'Dry season' or 'high season' in the Maldives is between December and March when rainfall is at its lowest however November and April are also good months with any signs of showers above the atolls passing quickly.

The water temperature never dips below 25 degrees and the air hovers between 25-30 degrees. You may find each island has it's own micro-climate, but there are general patterns that occur throughout the year. During the dry season you'll expect to experience up to 10 hours of sunshine a day making visibility for snorkelling and diving excellent.

May-October is generally more humid with short, heavy down pours which can be dramtic but weather tends to move quickly.
