Perched on the edge of the Atlantic, Lisbon is a city where history and culture intertwine at every turn! From its labyrinthine alleyways lined with azulejo-clad buildings to its grand buildings and bustling fado houses, Portugal’s capital tells a story of resilience, discovery, and artistic flair. 

Whether you’re strolling through the ancient district of Alfama, gazing at the grand Manueline architecture of Belém, or soaking up the city’s bohemian charm in Barrio Alto, Lisbon offers an immersive journey through time and tradition.

Lisbon boasts many beautiful shops – be sure to check out the local handcrafts and handmade Portuguese tiles. Often found outside the shops are cheap offcuts and seconds, perfect for some creative DIY projects.

Stop at a small side street and grab a Bica and Pasta da Nata (a coffee and egg custard tart) for a delicious little snack. Fancy something bigger? Why not try the Time Out Food Hall, filled with delicious delights from the top restaurants in Lisbon. It was one of my favourite spots and a great place to try lots of local delicacies. It's also an excellent place to pick up a few bottles of port and wine to take home. Definitely one of the best things to do in Lisbon for foodies. 

For a surreal but delicious treat, why not head over to Chinatown and try one of the secret Chinese restaurants for some of the best Chinese food I have eaten outside of China. The restaurants are hidden in clandestine buildings above the streets, and if you can find them, you’re in for a treat!

Be sure to spend some time wandering though some of Lisbon’s beautiful squares, nibbling on delicious pastries and cheese as you go. Travel across the river to Cacilhas by boat, where fresh seafood and vinho verde (green wine) await in this cute area that rewards you with views across the bay of Lisbon.

The Oceanario de Lisboa is a giant aquarium set in the bay. It has ocean habitats for sharks, rays, penguins and tropical fish – it’s great fun for all the family! Next to the aquarium is the famous Casino Lisboa, with its 700 slot machines, 22 game tables and 600 seat theatre.

Spend your evenings in Lisbon listening to some exciting traditional Fado music in one of many settings, from traditional restaurants, trendy bars, or tiny hole in the walls. It’s one of the best things to do in Lisbon for music-lovers! Afterwards, head to the famous Docks Club where trendy 20-something locals dance the night away to R&B and afro beat until the wee hours of the morning in this exciting waterfront club.

Take a trip on the famous 28 tram – it’s a Lisbon icon for good reason! As it makes its way through the undulating cobbled streets you'll pass through Estrela and past the Basílica da Estrela, a beautiful Baroque masterpiece with a huge domed roof. From there you'll travel onwards to Sao Bento, the setting for the Portuguese parliament building, and then past the ancient Se Cathedral. 

Why not finish in Graca, a great place to feel the hustle and bustle of daily life with a high street full of family run shops.

After your exciting experience in Lisbon, why not rent a car and take a trip to the beach? On the way you can visit the amazing Sintra, famed for the amazing multi-coloured Pena Palace atop a hill and its famous Instagrammable Quinta da Regaleira which is a giant masonic initiation well, featuring a spiral staircase into a tunnel system.

The beautiful towns of Cascais and Estoril are within 30 minutes of Lisbon by car. They both have great beaches, a laid-back coastal vibe, and are the perfect places to complement your city break.
