Boasting more than 10 Major League franchises across NFL, basketball, ice hockey, baseball, football and rugby, New York is the perfect city to combine a sporting event with a city break. With the plethora of tourist attractions New York has to offer from Times Square to the Statue of Liberty, it is very easy to enjoy a city break that includes a sporting event. The amount of different sports on offer means that New York offers the opportunity to watch a sporting event all year round, whether NFL (September to January), basketball and ice hockey (October-April) or baseball or football (March to October).

In addition to regular season games for its many franchises, New York is host to many one-off events as well. Madison Square Garden is a major boxing venue, the New York Marathon is the world's largest, and The US Tennis Open is held in New York at Flushing Meadows. Although one off events may be attractive, they are likely to be harder to acquire tickets for and could affect accommodation costs while the event is on.

New York Top Tip - Be aware of the location of the team you choose to see play. Only two franchises play in Manhattan: The New York Rangers (ice hockey) and New York Knicks (basketball), both of whom call Madison Square Garden home. The other franchises can vary in distance from the city centre; the Jets and Giants (NFL) both play in East Rutherford New Jersey at the Meadowlands Stadium, The Yankees and Mets (baseball) play in the Bronx and Queens respectively and the Brooklyn Nets are aptly named with the Barclays Centre located in the titular borough. There are good transport links to these stadia from Manhattan, however you will need to factor journey times into your trip.

Rivalling New York for the number of its Sports Franchises, LA is similarly an all you can eat buffet of sporting events and attractions. You can enjoy a city break, relax at one of Southern California's beautiful beaches, thrill seek on the rides at either Disney or Universal or set off on a fly drive. Not short on the one off events either, Los Angeles will host the 2028 Summer Olympic games although, much like any other Olympic games, demand for tickets will be high. From Hollywood to Anaheim, Beverly Hills to the Beaches of Orange County, LA has so much to offer in terms of your holiday and the same is true of its sport with two franchises for each of the big four sports: two Major League soccer teams and two colleges UCLA and USC. When you visit Southern California you are spoilt for choice.

Los Angeles Top Tip - Much like New York, location is the key element for LA. The city is a large metropolis and its sports teams are spread across it. A city built for the motor vehicle, driving is a more likely option than public transport, so make allowances for traffic and parking before heading off to the game. 

While not boasting as many different franchises as New York and Los Angeles, the Bay area is a fantastic place to visit and has plenty to satisfy the sports fan. With franchises in San Francisco, Oakland and San Jose there are options for all of the big four sports as well as Major League Soccer. Offering such attractions as Alcatraz, the Golden Gate Bridge and Union Square, San Francisco is a perfect city break, and fly drives to Yosemite, Napa Valley and Highway 1 are also great options.

Much like New York, sports fans will have to venture beyond the city centre to see the big games, as only the San Francisco Giants (baseball) and Golden State Warriors (basketball) play within the city. A trip across the bay to Oakland will offer the Raiders (NFL) and Athletics (baseball) or slightly further out the 49ers (NFL) new stadium is in Santa Clara. San Jose hosts the Sharks (ice hockey) and Earthquakes (football), with San Jose's location to the south of the Bay, a game with one of these could make a great start to a Highway 1 trip. 

This historic city on the US north east coast is home to some of America's most storied franchises: The Boston Bruins, one of the Original 6 teams to make up the NHL; The Celtics, who as well as being a founder member, have the most championships in NBA history; The Patriots are the modern NFL Dynasty with 6 Championships in 9 Super Bowl appearances since 2001, and the Red Sox,  one of baseball's historic franchises whose rivalry with the New York Yankees goes back over 100 years.

Boston is one of America's oldest cities with plenty of history to explore on a city break, from its colonial past as a key city in the American Revolution to its place as a modern port. Alternatively with the Patriots, Bruins and Celtics all playing games in the Autumn why not take a fly drive to take in New England's Fall Colours?

Whether hitting Miami's famous South Beach, airboating through the Everglades or exploring the Florida Keys, a Miami trip offers a wide range of different holidays to experience and is perfect for combining with a sporting event. With teams in all four major US sports, college sports at the university of Miami and the forthcoming addition of Inter Miami, the MLS side owned by David Beckham, Miami has plenty to offer. Miami Top Tip - Be careful at what time of year you travel e.g. a Miami Dophins (NFL) game in September (Hurricane season) has the risk of lightning delays. Miami's game vs Tennessee in 2018 took over 7 hours to complete after two delays due to lightning.

New Orleans can't boast as many franchises as some of the bigger cities on this list, but the city still has plenty to offer the sports fan.

The New Orleans Saints are the local NFL team and the fans inside the Mercedes-Benz Superdome are some of the loudest in the NFL producing an electric atmosphere on gameday. To get the full game experience check out Champions Square for the tailgate party before kickoff. Next door to the Superdome you have the local NBA team the New Orleans Pelicans for all the basketball fans. New Orleans also plays host to a team in the fast growing Major League Rugby, the NOLA Gold.

New Orleans has so much to offer the visitor. Explore the French Quarter, take a paddle boat down the Mississippi or a street car up Canal Street for a unique insight into the city before venturing beyond to explore Plantation Country or the musical delights beyond in Memphis and Tennessee.

Home to the Redskins (NFL) Wizards (NBA) Capitals (NHL) Nationals (MLB) and DC United (MLS), Washington DC offers a variety of sports that could fit in with your travel plans whatever time of year you visit.

The nation's capital boasts many popular monuments. Washington has plenty to choose from, with the White House, Capitol Building headlining the attractions for a city break, the Shenandoah Mountains are close by for a fly drive, or why not explore multiple cities (and perhaps multiple sports events) as Philadelphia, New York and Boston are easily accessible by train.

Washington Top Tip - If you're looking for NFL or Baseball but the fixtures don't suit your holiday dates, check out the Ravens and Orioles in nearby Baltimore.

The Windy City has much to offer both for tourists and sports fans. The ivy covered walls of Wrigley Field have hosted the Chicago Cubs (baseball) for over 100 years and there has been a little bit more fortune around the ground recently, after breaking their 108 year title drought in 2016. Chicago's other baseball team, the White Sox, has also had recent successes winning the world series in 2005. Continuing the city's rich sports heritage, the Chicago Bears are one of the oldest franchises in the NFL (one of only two original teams from 1920 remaining) and the Blackhawks are one of the NHL's original six teams. The Chicago Bulls are one of the most recognisable basketball franchises thanks in part to the feats of Michael Jordan while playing for the team.

Chicago has plenty to offer beyond the game. Take a trip to Willis Tower, which was the tallest building in the world when completed in 1973 and is still the second tallest building in the USA, hit the shops on the Magnificent Mile, or take a stroll along the shores of Lake Michigan.

Chicago Top Tip - If watching a late season Bears game make sure you wrap up warm. It can get very cold, with a game versus the Green Bay Packers in 2016 getting as low as -17 degrees Celsius.

More than just theme parks and thrill rides, Orlando is a perfect destination to take in a sporting event. After a day in the parks catch an Orlando Magic (basketball) game or an Orlando City (football) match. the University of Central Florida is also located in Orlando for those looking to experience college sports. Tampa is just two hours down the road and boasts NFL (Buccaneers) NHL (Lightning) and baseball (Rays) teams for fans of those sports.

With Disney and Universal's theme parks, plenty of shopping, and activities including championship Golf Courses in Orlando and the Kennedy Space Centre and beaches on both the Atlantic and Gulf coasts within driving distance, Orlando and the surrounding areas definitely offers something for everyone.

Orlando Top Tip - If you can't get to your favourite game live while in Orlando, check out NBC Sports Bar and Grill at Universal City Walk. With almost 100 screens showing sport it is a great place to eat, drink and watch the game.

Las Vegas is very much a growing sports market. Always a home for some of the biggest professional boxing fights, Las Vegas now boasts the Las Vegas Golden Knights (NHL) and work is well underway for the new stadium as the Oakland Raiders will become the Las Vegas Raiders in 2020. The Las Vegas Motor Speedway is home to many events including NASCAR and Vegas also hosts the USA leg of World Rugby 7s tour.

The casinos on the strip, the multitude of shows including Cirque de Soleil, magic, comedy and music, Vegas has plenty to offer as a city break and is also a great start or finish to a fly drive to explore some of America's spectacular national parks. Travel to the east and visit the magnificent Grand Canyon, Zion, Bryce and Lake Powell or head west through Death Valley and Yosemite to California.
