What to Expect on a Mekong River Cruise

A cruise along the Mekong River is the perfect way to see traditional villages, experience local cultures, witness incredible scenery and delight in regional delicacies, all whilst travelling in comfort.

Here’s a short guide as to what you can look forward to whilst travelling the Mekong.

The Mekong River

South East Asia’s longest river spans six countries, starting in the Tibetan Plateau and flowing through China, Myanmar (Burma), Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam – that’s about the same distance as going from London to the North Pole. This river network acts as the lifeblood for many of these regions, with its rich biodiversity, extensive fisheries and agriculture supporting millions of people’s livelihoods. It’s no surprise that it’s called the Rice Bowl of Asia!

With three distinct sections of this mighty waterway, split between the traditionally local feel of the Delta in Vietnam, the wildlife dense countryside and lively cities of Cambodia, and the tranquil unrivalled scenery of Laos, there’s something for everyone.

Mekong Delta

This vast, fertile region in Southern Vietnam is responsible for the majority of the country’s produce, with its extensive channels and tributaries being referred to as the ‘River of Nine Dragons.’

I enjoyed a one night cruise along these waterways on a traditional rice barge known as a Bassac. From the sundeck you could watch riverside life pass you by as the boat drifted through floating settlements and bustling towns. The highlight was absolutely taking the smaller boats out on excursions to gain an insight into local life. I scoured the traditional markets in search of a bargain (settling on a woven basket which now proudly holds my house keys) before donning a conical straw hat (Nón Lá) and cycling through the rice paddies to find a spot to watch the sun set over this beautiful region.

For those who want to spend longer on board, there are a multitude of itineraries that combine more of the Mekong Delta with the Lower Mekong on popular cruise lines such as the Heritage Line Jayavarman which offers 3, 4 or 7 night itineraries.

Lower Mekong

A dynamic region occupying the stretch between Siem Reap in Cambodia and My Tho in Vietnam, the Lower Mekong basin is characterised by significant fish biodiversity - second only to the Amazon - lush jungles, and a deeply integrated harmony with the community.

You will find a cruise here to be an enchanting experience that varies depending on water levels; high water (Sep-Nov) or low water (Dec-Aug). One route we recommend starts in the lively capital of Cambodia, Phnom Penh, onboard the Mekong Pandaw for four nights. This authentic colonial era styled steamer really gives a timeless immersion to the journey upstream. For most, the unique stilted houses on Tonlé Sap Lake are a standout, giving a different perspective on nomadic life, and of course exploring the magnificent temples of Angkor Wat is also a must once you reach Siem Reap.

Cruises in Cambodia can be done in both directions between Phnom Penh and Siem Reap, and with cruise lines such as Pandaw River Cruises offering 3, 4, 7 or 10 night itineraries, many of them go as far as the Upper Mekong in Laos.

Upper Mekong

Synonymous with rugged mountain gorges, sweeping vistas and untamed jungles, the calmer Upper Mekong offers a more untouched feel and stretches from the Lao-Thailand border to the capital of Laos, Vientiane.

You can relax on board a day boat such as on our Mekong River Adventure and travel from the Golden Triangle in Thailand to the charming UNESCO listed city Luang Prabang in Laos, taking in the rolling countryside whilst staying in hotels throughout. Otherwise, if you’re happy to meander at a slower pace, you can embark on a multi-day sailing trip. For those interested in the latter, a fantastic option is 3 nights onboard the Mekong Sun. Words can hardly do justice to the natural beauty that unfolds around you. Wake up every morning and admire majestic waterfalls from a sun lounger atop the cruise as you prepare to embark on the adventure of the day. Explore the legendary Pak Ou Caves, adorned with statues of the Buddha, before trekking to a jungle village and sampling the finest homemade Lao-Lao (rice whiskey of Laos).

If you want more activities onboard or more stopovers, these can easily be arranged by Trailfinders, with itineraries varying from one day to six days. More premium vessels such as Heritage Line Anouvong offer additional excursions like kayaking in the rural backwaters amongst quaint Laotian villages.

Life on Board

Whichever route you take, there is a range of cruises perfectly suited to your needs! From traditional steamer-style boats and authentic Bassac rice barges to more contemporary vessels with boutique cabins and luxury furnishings, life on board is designed to be comfortable. No matter your style, you will have all the creature comforts you need, from air conditioning and an en suite to a restaurant and a sun deck complete with a bar. If you really feel like splashing out, the more luxurious cruises such as Heritage Line The Jahan even have a jacuzzi and spa facilities for that something extra special.
