Naples is a true gastronomic highlight of Italy and renowned as the birthplace of Italian pizza, so prepare to indulge in some of the country’s best cuisine. Sample local delicacies such as fresh mozzarella, pizza fritters and creamy gelato. Don’t miss out on trying a classic Neapolitan margherita pizza in the birthplace of this beloved dish. Coming in at a close second is Bologna for its famed Bolognese.
Italy’s fashion capital Milan is filled with luxury boutiques and contemporary designers, a shopper’s paradise. Browse boutiques along the Quadrilatero della Moda, explore the historic Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II shopping arcade, or discover contemporary Italian designers in chic neighbourhoods like Brera and Porta Nuova.
You can’t just choose one Italian city for romance! Verona is the home of Renaissance romance and is best known as the base of Shakespeare’s star-crossed lovers, Romeo and Juliet. Whilst here, embark on a search for the renowned Casa di Giulietta (Juliet’s Balcony), which is hidden amongst cobbled lanes and local piazzas.
Venice is also one of the most romantic cities in the world, famed for its charming canals, majestic palaces and intimate eateries. For something special, board a traditional gondola and glide through the picturesque maze of waterways and the renowned Grand Canal. Brimming with history and culture, and built on more than 100 small islands, this charismatic city also boasts a multitude of hidden treasures. Hand in hand, explore the Renaissance architecture, Gothic palaces, and the elegant St Mark’s Square as well as the picturesque palaces.
Perched on the Gulf of Naples, the breathtaking city of Sorrento boasts a palette of bright hue buildings that roll down the cliffside. The various coastal paths offer mesmerising views over the shimmering waters with Mount Vesuvius looming in the distance. Whilst here, enjoy the perfect combination of delicious fresh seafood, charming streets filled with boutiques, and beach clubs. Sorrento is also the ideal location from which to visit Pompeii, Capris, Ischia, and the rest of the Amalfi Coast.
Just beyond the Puglian border in Basilicata lies the magical city of Matera, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Matera enchants with dramatic landscapes, ancient architecture, and charming alleyways, a photographers dream. The city has also proved to be a popular filming destination for movies including Wonder Woman and James Bond, No Time to Die and Quantum of Solace.
Away from the mainland lies the island of Sardinia, known for its white sand beaches, lush hinterland, enchanting ancient ruins, and rich Italian culture. On the north west coast, the city of Alghero epitomises island life and is filled with charm and character, due to its extensive Spanish influence. Lecce in Puglia, is often referred to as the ‘Florence of the South’ and is a stunning baroque city with various architectural surprises. The city offers lively piazzas, Roman ruins, and delicious local cuisine located along the golden limestone streets.
