Best Destinations for Guided Group Touring

Last year I was lucky enough to go on two guided group tours and I have been completely converted! At the start of the year I got to tick off some bucket list destinations of mine on a trip to Guatemala, Belize and Mexico – combining my love of history with swimming with sharks and rays as well as enjoying plenty of rum punch – what more could you want?

Thinking nothing could top this trip, I then visited Peru and it quickly became my favourite country I’ve been to! Going with a group tour allowed me to visit destinations I would have been too nervous to travel to by myself, maximised my time in these places and gave me complete peace of mind – taking what could have been months of planning into a simple call to book.

Here is a list of 10 destinations (in no particular order) which we believe are particularly well catered to a guided group tour.

China

There is no better time than now to visit China, with new visa free travel for British citizens for up to 30 days confirmed! This has been agreed up to 31st December 2026, however, there is hope it will be extended – fingers crossed!

Top experiences in China:

• Walk along the world-famous Great Wall of China

• Cruise along the Yangtze River

• Admire Xian’s famed Terracotta Army

Why a group tour? A tour guide in China will navigate language barriers and organise smooth entrance to historic sites (which can have confusing rules here).

Our favourite tours: Wonders of China and Solo-ish China

Vietnam

Vietnam rightly remains as a favourite travel destination – boasting rich culture, golden beaches, tranquil waterways and soaring mountains, there are unlimited experiences in Vietnam.

Top experiences in Vietnam:

• Hike the dramatic landscapes of Vietnam’s lush north

• Cruise the turquoise waters of Halong Bay

• Taste delicious street food in one of the lively markets

Why a group tour? Travelling with a group around Vietnam offers a fun and social experience, especially for solo travellers.

Our favourite tours: Essential Vietnam & Cambodia and Vietnam Express Southbound

Our favourite tours: Discover Namibia and Cape & Namibia Adventure

The ‘Stans’

Referring to five countries in Central Asia (Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan), the ‘Stans’ boast imperial cities, Silk Road history and vast wilderness. Gaining in popularity, yet still relatively undiscovered by tourists, make sure to visit in their unspoilt best.

Top experiences in the ‘Stans’

• Visit Uzbekistan’s glorious Silk Road cities

• Stay in traditional yurt accommodation

• Hike breathtaking landscapes, from vast deserts to lush alpine meadows

Why a group tour? English is not widely spoken, and transport options can vary dramatically depending on where you are so a guided group tour can make all the difference here.

Our favourite tours: Premium Uzbekistan and The Five Stans of the Silk Road

Japan

Popular for good reason, Japan offers unique culture, beautiful scenery and a fascinating blend of the ancient and modern.

Top experiences in Japan

• Witness iconic Mount Fuji

• Admire the bright lights and excitement of Tokyo

• Stay in a traditional ryokan (typically featuring tatami-mat rooms, sliding paper screens, and an onsen)

Why a group tour? As well as navigating language barriers, a guided group tour in Japan can often end up better value than a self guided trip due to the country’s high prices.

Our favourite tours: Simply Japan and Discover Japan

Peru

Truly having it all, Peru boasts a rich culture, breathtakingly diverse landscapes, and charming cities – this country is an absolute must-visit.

Top experiences in Peru

• Hike (or take the train) to Machu Piccu, the lost Inca city in the clouds

• Stay within the Amazon Rainforest and witness incredible wildlife

• Discover the floating Uros Islands on Lake Titicaca

Why a group tour? You will quickly appreciate your guides help with navigating language barriers – even confident Spanish speakers may struggle as indigenous languages are still the first language for much of the population in regional areas. Also, for those excited to hike the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu you must be accompanied by a licensed guide!

Our favourite tours: Amazon to the Andes and Absolute Peru

Uganda & Rwanda

Uganda and Rwanda boast one of the world’s most unique wildlife experiences – the chance to see endangered mountain gorillas. The dense forests of these national parks are renowned as one of the last remaining habitats of these great apes and offer a truly unforgettable experience.

Top experiences in Uganda & Rwanda

• Admire a family of mountain gorillas in their natural habitat

• Trek through jungle to see chimpanzees

• Enjoy river rafting along the River Nile in Jinja

Why a group tour? Organising permits for all the national parks you enter can be confusing to sort yourself. Furthermore, the local laws require that any treks to see gorillas are done with a park ranger in a small group.
