Temperature: Colombia’s temperature doesn’t change much throughout the year. Instead, they depend on altitude. Bogotá (2,600m) stays cool and spring-like, Medellín (1,500m) enjoys its nickname as the ‘City of Eternal Spring’, and coastal cities like Cartagena remain hot and tropical year-round.

Rainfall: The main factor when considering the best time to visit Colombia is rainfall. Colombia has two rainy seasons (April to June and September to November), and two drier seasons (December to March and July to August).

Best Time to Visit Colombia by Season

December to March: Peak Travel Season

Weather: Sunny, dry, and perfect for beaches and outdoor adventures. Considered by many to be the best time to visit Colombia.

Highlights: Cartagena and the Caribbean coasts are at their best, Bogotá and Medellín host vibrant cultural events, and there’s great trekking opportunities in Tayrona National Park and the Cocora Valley.

Things to consider: Prices can be higher and popular destinations are busier, especially around Christmas and New Year.

April to June: Rainy but Lush

Weather: Afternoon showers are common, but the mornings can still be sunny.

Highlights: Fewer tourists mean lower prices and less-crowded attractions. Landscapes are lush and green, ideal for photography, and although the Medellín Flower Festival doesn’t begin until July, the city already blooms beautifully in this season.

Best for: Travellers who don’t mind a bit of rain and want fewer crowds.

July to August: Short Dry Season

Weather: Another dry spell and another one of the best times to visit Colombia – this time is especially good for outdoor adventures.

Highlights: Whale watching season begins on the Pacific Coast, Medellín’s Feria de las Flores (Flower Festival) takes place in July/August, and there’s excellent hiking conditions in the Andes.

Best for: Culture lovers, hikers, and wildlife enthusiasts.

September to November: Green & Quiet

Weather: Rainy again, especially in October, but showers are often short-lived.

Highlights: This is the best time to visit Colombia’s Amazon region, as river levels rise, and the wildlife is more active. There are fewer tourists across the country, and the costs of airfares and accommodation go down.

Best for: Off the beaten path explorers looking for a more authentic experience.
