With over 1,000 islands, UNESCO-listed cities like Dubrovnik and Split, and a vibrant cultural scene, timing your trip to Croatia can make a huge difference in the experience you have. 


The good news is that Croatia is a year-round destination. The best time to visit Croatia depends on whether you’re looking for sun drenched beaches, cultural festivals and experiences, or fewer crowds with budget-friendly travel.


I personally love visiting Croatia in the spring time, due to fewer crowds and pleasant sightseeing temperatures - but everyone has different preferences! Read on for my guide to the best time to visit Croatia to see what will suit you best.

Croatia’s Climate Overview

Summer (June to August): Hot, sunny and perfect for swimming. This is Croatia’s peak tourist season. 


Spring (April to May): Mild weather, blooming landscapes, and fewer tourists


Autumn (September to October): Warm seas, pleasant temperatures, and it’s the best time to visit Croatia for wine tours. 


Winter (November to March): Quiet, cooler, and best for cultural exploration without the crowds.

Spring (April to May): Perfect for Exploring Cities and Nature


Why visit now: It’s the best time to visit Croatia for sightseeing without the summer crowds. 


Weather: Mild temperatures which average between 15°C – 22°C. 


Highlights: Wander through Dubrovnik’s Old Town without the summer rush, go hiking in Plitvice Lakes and Krka National Parks, and enjoy the local flower festivals and Easter celebrations. 


Best for: Travellers who enjoy outdoor activities and cultural experiences in a relaxed atmosphere.

Summer (June to August): Peak Season & Beach Paradise


Why visit now: This is the best time to visit Croatia for sun-seekers and nightlife lovers


Weather: Hot and sunny, with temperatures averaging between 25°C – 35°C.


Highlights: Island hopping between Hvar, Korčula and Vis, attending the Ultra Europe Festival in Split (July), and enjoying vibrant nightlife in coastal cities.

Weather: Pleasant (18°C – 27°C), with sea temperatures perfect for swimming until late October. 


Highlights: Enjoying wine tours in Istria and Dalmatia, the Dubrovnik Film Festival in October, and sailing trips with calm seas and fewer crowds. 


Best for: Couples, food and wine enthusiasts, and travellers who want summer vibes without the peak season chaos.

Why visit now: While it’s not beach season, this is the best time to visit Croatia for cultural events and festive charm. 


Weather: Cooler (5°C – 15°C), especially inland. 


Highlights: Zagreb’s famous Christmas market (named one of Europe’s best!), empty UNESCO towns (Dubrovnik and Split without the crowds), and lower hotel and flight prices.
