Jordan’s weather varies significantly by region:
The highlands (Amman, Petra and Wadi Rum) are at higher altitudes, which means cooler nights are more variations in temperatures.
The Dead Sea lies about 400m below sea level which means it gets very hot, especially in the summer.
The Red Sea (Aqaba) has more stable weather and is warm in most seasons.
Rainfall in Jordan is most likely between November and March, especially in the north and highland areas.
Why visit Jordan now?
• This is widely regarded as one of the best times to visit Jordan.
• Temperatures are fairly mild – making it perfect for exploring Petra, Jerash, and hiking.
• Wildflowers are in bloom, especially in nature reserves and the countryside.
• Days are long, and nights are cool but not freezing.
Considerations
• There’s a seasonal desert wind at this time of the year called khamseen that can bring sand and grit.
• Temperatures can still rise as you move into late spring, especially in desert zones.
Why visit Jordan now?
• It’s hot… very hot! In some areas (Dead Sea, Jordan Valley), temperatures can soar to 40°C+.
• However – it’s low season which means fewer tourists! You can enjoy sites like Petra early in the morning or later in the evening more peacefully.
• Summer is a great time to visit the Red Sea/Aqaba – the swimming, snorkelling and diving at this time of year are excellent.
Considerations
• Midday sightseeing can be exhausting – and even risky in the intense heat.
• You’ll need to plan for hydration, shade, and possibly shorter daytime touring.
Why visit Jordan now?
• After the intense summer heat, the weather cools down to very comfortable temperatures.
• This is the best time to visit Jordan for 4x4 desert tours, trekking and exploring archaeological sites.
• There are fewer crowds than in high spring, but it’s still a very popular time to visit.
• Stargazing at Wadi Rum is fantastic at this time of year with clear skies and moderate nights.
Considerations:
• Occasional early rainfall later in the season (especially in November).
• Evenings can get chilly, particularly in desert camps.
Why visit Jordan now?
• Cooler temperatures in the highlands makes walking and exploring more bearable.
• The Dead Sea and Aqaba remain relatively mild and pleasant.
• It’s quieter in many tourist areas and is therefore a more peaceful time to see Petra or relax in the desert.
Considerations
• Nights can be very cold in Petra, Wadi Rum and Amman.
• Rainfall risk is higher; flash floods are possible in desert wadis.
• Some higher locations may even experience snow!
When is the worst time of year to visit Jordan?
Probably the height of summer (July to August) if you’re planning on doing a lot of hiking or spending time in desert areas, as the heat can be extreme. On the other hand, winter can be off-putting for some due to the cold nights and potential for rain.
Is Ramadan a bad time to visit Jordan?
Not necessarily bad but visiting Jordan during Ramadan requires some sensitivity. Some restaurants and shops may be closed during daylight hours, and cultural dynamics shift. However, evenings can be vibrant once people break their fasts. Always check the dates for Ramadan for the year you want to travel to Jordan.
Can I go to Jordan just for a beach holiday?
Yes! Aqaba on the Red Sea is wonderful in the summer for swimming and diving. But if you want to avoid the heat, spring and autumn beach trips in Jordan can also be excellent, and the sea remains warm.
When is the best time to visit Jordan for stargazing?
Wadi Rum is one of the best dark sky spots in the world and visiting in the spring or autumn is ideal, with clear skies and comfortable night temperatures.
I’m planning a hiking trip, when should I go?
Autumn through to late spring tends to be the best time to visit Jordan for hiking. For example, May is very pleasant, through midday heat can creep in and nights in the desert can be rather chilly.
