By Holly Wallis

Filmed in six countries – Morocco, Greece, Italy, Iceland, Scotland and Norway – Christopher Nolan’s new ‘The Odyssey’ adaptation is the ultimate set-jet film of the year. Drawing you into the edge-of-your-seat action, over the course of the film, be transported from the ancient desert settlements of Morocco, to the otherworldly black sand beaches of Iceland. Throughout, be pulled along the stormy, choppy waters of Norway, where the tumultuous sailing of the Viking replica ship 'Draken Harald Hårfagre', altered in the film for the Grecian era, was filmed. Offering incredible inspiration for your next holiday, these filming spots can be easily visited, with all just a short flight away from the UK and Ireland.

Read on for our guide to filming locations reportedly used in Christopher Nolan’s new ‘The Odyssey’ movie (2026), to help inspire your next holiday - or odyssey of your own!

The Peloponnese, Greece

It wouldn’t be 'The Odyssey' without parts of it filmed in Greece - famously the original predominant setting of this Ancient Greek epic. The Peloponnese region in Greece was likely chosen for its dramatic rugged landscape, unspoiled beaches, and unique coastal rock formations and coves, making it a worthy filming location.

Moments from the film that were shot here include the Cyclops scene, which used the 20m high 'Nestor’s Cave' as the setting for the Cyclop’s lair.

Where to stay: 5★ W Costa Navarino – this apparently also happens to be where the cast stayed during filming.

Ait Benhaddou, Morocco

Surrounded by rolling sand dunes and nestled in the foothills of Morocco's Atlas Mountains, this beautiful UNESCO-listed ksar (North African fortified village) doubled as the location for Troy.

With the town’s ancient mud-brick architecture, it is a go-to location choice for ancient citadel movie replicas, having also been used as a filming location for ‘Lawrence of Arabia’ and ‘Gladiator’, as well as ‘Game of Thrones’.

Kasbah Ait Benhaddou, Morocco

Essaouira, Morocco

Essaouira was featured in the film as the location where ‘The Trojan Horse’ comes ashore at the beginning, and was also where Odysseus (played by Matt Damon) sets sail for home at the end of the film.

The beautiful resort town of Essaouira is a popular holiday destination, known particularly for its fantastic wind sports, UNESCO-listed medina, and fantastic seafood. This destination is well-combined with a visit to Marrakech, being only roughly a 3 hour drive west of the city.

Aeolian Islands, Italy

The Aeolian Islands in Italy were used to depict the floating island of Aeolus in the movie. The real Aeolian Islands island group is made up of seven islands, though filming principally took place at Lipari, Vulcano, and Basiluzzo.

The impressive landscapes of these islands contribute to a sense of geographic turmoil, setting the stage for the uneasy action to follow. Resulting from 260,000 years of volcanic activity, these geographically striking islands are home to hot springs, large volcanic craters that you can hike to, and therapeutic sulfur mud baths.

Favignana was used as another filming location – a small island just off the coast of Sicily, home to the well-preserved 9th Century Castello di Santa Caterina. This served as the Ithaca home of Odysseus’s wife, Penelope, and their son, Telemachus.

Reynisfjara Beach, Iceland

The scene in which Odysseus journeys to the underworld to consult with the blind Theban prophet, Tiresias, was reportedly filmed at Reynisfijara Beach in Southern Iceland.

Various other scenes were shot at natural beauty hotspots around the Icelandic coast and countryside, including Hjörleifshöfði, the Snæfellsnes peninsula, the Markarfljót river, and the harbour of Landeyjahöfn. A dream location for movie makers, within a few hours drive in Iceland you could traverse black sand beaches, lush green countryside, glaciers, and waterfalls.

Original Locations from Homer’s Greek Epic

For those wanting to experience the original mythical inspirations for the Greek epic, there are many fantastic ancient sites you can visit today.

Troy – Troy, in modern-day Turkey (Türkiye), is home to a full-scale replica of how the myth described the Trojan Horse, into which you can climb yourself. It also features a vast scattering of architectural remains of the city across well-maintained grounds and protected areas.

Ithaca – known for being the home of Odysseus, according to the original epic poem, Ithaca is one of Greece's stunning Ionian Islands, located next to perhaps the more famous Kefalonia island. Well worth a visit, here you can explore small ancient ruins alongside beautiful beaches and coves, as well as charming villages and towns.

Sparta – this lively Greek city is known for being the ancient kingdom of Menelaus and Helen, where Telemachus visits to seek news of his father. In the Christopher Nolan film, 'Methoni Castle' in Messenia, Greece doubled as the Kingdom of Sparta.

Crete – the location that Odysseus refers to as the place he is visiting from, during his false tales to hide his identity, when he firsts returns back to Ithaca at the end of the story, and is testing the loyalty of his servants. For history enthusiasts, though unconnected from the time period used in Homer's writings, Crete is home to the Bronze Age ruins linked to the legendary Minotaur and the ancient Minoan civilization.

Castle at Frangokastello beach, Crete, Greece

Composed around the 8th Century BC, Homer’s 'The Odyssey' epic is undoubtedly one of the most remarkable journeys ever imagined. Providing inspiration to daring travellers and adventurers for millennia to follow, the places and excitement that come with Odysseus’ arrival onto each new island and entry into each new settlement in the poem, stays with the reader.

Staying true to the atmosphere and intentions of the original, Christopher Nolan’s incredible filming locations for 'The Odyssey' are spectacular destinations and many are popular holiday spots.
