Thailand is a magical place that offers a myriad of experiences catering for everyone. From bustling cities to stunning scenery and beautiful beaches on tropical islands. Beach lovers are spoilt with seemingly endless options, ranging from idyllic tranquil islands to unbeatable family friendly beach resorts as well as fun-filled nightlife, fabulous shopping, and delicious cuisine.

With its incredible diversity and hospitality, there are endless ways to see ‘The Land of Smiles’, so let’s explore some of the top things to do in Thailand.

1. Bangkok’s Temples & Markets

Any time spent in Thailand’s capital must at least include a visit to the best temples, the famous reclining Buddha of Wat Pho being a focal point. Other unmissable sights include the Grand Palace and the Temple of Emerald Buddha (Wat Phra Kaew), situated in the same compound. Admire the ornate shrines and tall stupas covered with glazed tiles or gold leaf.

For a real unique experience, visit the fascinating floating market where you will journey through a maze of canals and see local vendors sell anything from street food to clothes or just fruit, vegetables and fresh products for cooking. The lively night markets are bustling with many stalls selling gifts, souvenirs, clothing and street food. They're a quintessential Bangkok attraction and one of the best things to do in Thailand.

2. Interact with elephants

Situated in the south of Thailand, in the heart of the spectacular Khao Sok National Park, Elephant Hills Tented Camp provides a safari-style camp experience coupled with the opportunity to interact with rescued Asian elephants in their natural habitat. Elephant Hills promises fun for the whole family, and cherished memories that will last a lifetime. It's truly one of the best things to do in Thailand.

There are also many sanctuaries in the north of the country that offer an ethical way to spend time with and learn more about these majestic animals. Elephant Nature Park is a retirement home for elephants that have previously worked hard in the logging or tourism industry. Here you can learn about the problems elephants face in South East Asia, how they are cared for and get a chance to interact with them.

3. Beaches

Thailand is home to some of the best beaches in the world, and no holiday there is complete without experiencing at least one. The beaches in Thailand are the stuff of legend, covering everything from secluded stretches of serenity to party beaches where the fun never stops. The one that tops every list is Railay Beach. This picturesque corner of paradise is situated only a 30-minute drive from the Krabi International Airport. Bordered by craggy limestone cliffs and enveloped by dense rainforest, Railay is accessible only by longtail boat. While many visit for a day trip to snorkel its crystal-clear waters, watch the sunset or explore the peninsula’s hidden coves, many stay the night.

4. Northern Thailand

Northern Thailand is a must for anyone looking to get off the beaten track, boasting quiet villages and beautiful mountain scenery. Just a short flight away from Bangkok, it is the perfect add-on to any Thai holiday to complete the picture.

One of the most remarkable temples in northern Thailand is Wat Rong Khun or ‘The White Temple’ located in Chiang Rai, with its intricate and dramatic all white exterior and tiny fragments of glass to make it sparkle in the sun. Wat Phra Singh (pictured) is a stunning temple located in the heart of Chiang Mai's old city, home to several impressive structures, including a dazzling gold-plated pagoda. To get really disconnected, why not explore lush rice fields, marvel at lovely waterfalls or hike around impressive canyons for breathtaking views.

5. Street Food

Wherever you find yourself in Thailand, enjoying the local street food is essential for a complete experience in this beautiful country. Whether it’s a delicious Pad Thai or Tom Yum Shrimp, street food is always nearby to tantalise your tastebuds.

From cities with sprawling markets with plenty of choice, to smaller villages where street food stalls line the main streets, Thailand is a foodie’s mecca. Most Thai Street food is cooked to order in steaming woks, bubbling cauldrons of broth, or smoking grills over red-hot coals. Rice, of course, is a staple, and you’ll find it served with almost every dish. No matter if you’re looking for breakfast, lunch, dinner, or any snack in between, you’ll find something to satisfy you, and sampling the local cuisine is undoubtedly one of the best things to do in Thailand.
