    Chiang Mai
Thailand’s second largest city, Chiang Mai is an atmospheric and colourful destination, rich in history and set in the picturesque mistshrouded foothills of northern Thailand. It boasts a charming old town and hundreds of sacred temples, plus excellent restaurants, a superb night market and a laidback charm. It is also the perfect base for exploring the surrounding countryside and for sampling northern delicacies.

    Golden Triangle
Surrounding the point at which Laos, Thailand and Burma meet, the mountainous Golden Triangle region was once notorious as the centre of the local opium trade. Today the fertile valleys and rugged hillsides of this northernmost part of the Chiang Rai province are dotted with remote villages populated by the Hmong, Shan, Yao, Karen, Lahu and Lisu ethnic groups and bordered by the majestic Mekong River.
    Mae Hong Son Province
To gain a real insight into authentic northern Thai and Shan minority culture and to enjoy splendid mountain scenery, travel through this beautiful area west of Chiang Mai. Stops include the little-visited hillside town of Khun Yuam and remote Mae Hong Son itself, situated close to the Burmese border. Travel the scenic, winding roads to charming Pai before continuing on to Chiang Rai. This route is included in our North Thailand Discovery tour.

Today a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the picturesque ruins and restored temples are fascinating to explore. Its setting at the confluence of three rivers provides plenty of opportunities to soak up life on the waterways, whether at a riverside restaurant or aboard an overnight or dinner cruise.

    Kanchanaburi
Renowned as the location of the infamous bridge on the River Kwai, the provincial town of Kanchanaburi is surrounded by spectacular natural beauty. Today the town features a number of memorials to those who died and is also a great starting point from which to visit neighbouring national parks, waterfalls and caves.

  • When is the best time to visit Thailand?

Tropical Thailand is a fantastic year round destination with wet and dry seasons that vary by region. From November to February the weather tends to be dry and relatively cool with maximum temperatures ranging between 28°C and 32°C.
Thailand’s rainy season begins toward the end of June and continues until October during which time it rains on a daily basis, usually in the afternoon, and the humidity is high.
East coast beaches such as Koh Samui or Koh Phangan are driest from January to September. Those on the west coast such as Phuket, Krabi, Khao Lak, Koh Phi Phi and Koh Lanta are driest November to April.
