Cape Town definitely has no shortage of amazing beaches but Boulders Beach in False Bay offers something extra special – a colony of African Penguins! The only place in the world where you get close to them, watch as these smartly dressed creatures waddle along the shore, the soft white sand and turquoise waters forming a picture-perfect backdrop. This is a definite must-do for your stay in Cape Town which the whole family will enjoy!
This one’s for the adrenaline seekers! Swing like Tarzan from tree to tree as you’re taken on an informative journey through the native rainforest in the company of an expert guide. Keep your eyes peeled for the elusive vervet monkeys and colourful birdlife as you soar high above the forest floor. When all the activity gets too much, why not head to the nearby beaches of Plettenberg Bay – perfect for a few days of relaxation.
TF’s top hotel pick: The Robberg Beach Lodge
Just steps from the beach, this stylish ocean front lodge consists of four separate wings which combine into one beachside haven. Dolphins and whales are regularly sighted from the view deck and lounge areas. The hotel offers a great base for families to unwind after exploring the surrounding areas.
Table Mountain stands guard over Cape Town for all to see but the views from the top are even better! Jump on the revolving cable car and whiz up to the top where panoramic, picturesque views of the city below abound - from the bustling CBD to the sandy beaches of Camps Bay. You can even keep your eyes peeled for the elusive and very cute ‘dassies’ who call this mountain their home!
Hermanus is considered one of the world’s best whale watching spots! After their migration from Antarctica, southern right whales head to the South Africa coast to spend the winter in these sheltered shores. July to November is the time to spot them and not just from afar - the more inquisitive whales will sometimes swim up very close! African penguins, dolphins, seals and great white sharks may also be seen. What a way to spend the day!
The desert-like town of Oudtshoorn is home to playful meerkats - rise early and head out into the wild for your best chance to spot these intriguing creatures. Watch as they emerge from their burrows, soaking up their daily sun, whilst you learn about the secrets behind their adorable behaviour.
Also in this region and not to be missed are the vast Cango Caves. Journey deep underground into these caverns and wander through the colourful, towering limestone formations - which are millions of years in the making – for a once in a lifetime geography lesson! Test out the acoustics and you’ll understand why it was once used as a concert hall.
Nothing in life is guaranteed but spotting hippos on a boat cruise in St Lucia is about as close as you can get! The St Lucia Estuary is home to the largest hippo population on earth and the size of the small vessels means your captain will take you really close to these majestic animals. Keep your eyes peeled for crocs and plenty of colourful birdlife too.
The inspirational story of Nelson Mandela’s life is well known the world over and no trip to Cape Town is complete without visiting Robben Island. You’ll see the actual cell where he was imprisoned, as well as a full tour of the island, where Mandela spent 18 years of his celebrated life. This is quite simply a must-do for any visitors to South Africa’s 'mother city’.
We’ve left the best one till last…no holiday to South Africa is complete without a Big 5 safari! From the malaria-free Eastern Cape and family-friendly Madikwe to the lush game reserves of KwaZulu-Natal and of course iconic Kruger, there is plenty of choice for your safari. Keep your eyes peeled for the exciting Big 5 but don’t forget the colourful birdlife above and even the lesser-known Small 5! A safari is the perfect once-in-a-lifetime experience to share with your teenagers.
