Where to Go on Holiday in May

May is a great month to travel; the UK is only just warming up, prices are often lower than the peak summer months, and the weather in many destinations worldwide is perfect. Whether you’re looking for culture, adventure, beaches, or a bit of everything, read on for our guide to where to go on holiday in May.

Western Australia

If you’ve been dreaming of Australia but want to skip the crowded east coast, Western Australia is your answer. In May, Perth enjoys clear skies and mild temperatures – perfect for exploring King’s Park, sipping wine in the Margaret River region, or taking in the sunset over Cottesloe Beach.

Further north, May is an excellent time for swimming alongside gentle whale sharks at Ningaloo Reef – one of the world’s most extraordinary wildlife experiences. And with fewer tourists than other Aussie hotspots, you’ll find plenty of space to enjoy it all. Western Australia is a fantastic choice for where to go on holiday in May, for those seeking warm weather, wildlife, whale sharks and wine.

Sicily, Italy

Sicily in May is a dream: the Mediterranean sun is warm but not scorching, flowers are in bloom, and the beaches are blissfully uncrowded. You can wander the ancient streets of Syracuse, marvel at the mosaics in Palermo, or hit the slopes of Mount Etna before cooling off with a granita or a glass of local wine.

Food is a highlight here – think fresh seafood, arancini and cannoli – and visiting Sicily in May means there’s plenty of local markets bursting with fresh local produce. It’s a great place to travel in May for foodies!

Lisbon, Portugal

Portugal’s capital Lisbon is at its best in May – sunny days, fewer cruise ships, and a lovely sea breeze to keep temperatures comfortable. Ride the famous yellow trams through the cobbled streets, admire the colourful azulejo tiles, and tuck into delicious Pastéis de Nata straight from the oven.

Day trips are easy from Lisbon: the fairytale palaces of Sintra, the surf beaches of Cascais, and vineyards producing Portugal’s famous vinho verde are all within easy reach of the city.

Hawaii, USA

It’s a long journey, but Hawaii rewards you with tropical beauty and a laid-back pace. May is a great time to travel to Hawaii, between the busy winter and summer periods, so you’ll find quieter beaches and better hotel deals.

Choose from the volcanic landscapes of the Big Island, the lush waterfalls of Kauai, the idyllic island paradise of Maui, or the iconic Waikiki Beach in Oahu. Snorkelling, hiking and traditional Hawaiian luaus will keep your days full (and your Instagram feed happy!) Hawaii is a wonderful choice for where to go on holiday in May for honeymooners, bucket-list trips and outdoor adventurers.

Bali, Indonesia

May is one of the best months to visit Bali – the dry season has started, the humidity lower, and the landscapes are lush and green following the rainy season. Whether you’re seeking surf breaks in Canggu, yoga retreats in Ubud, or luxury resorts in Nusa Dua, Bali offers it all.

Don’t miss the island’s cultural side: ornate temples, colourful ceremonies, and traditional Balinese dance performances. End your day with a beachside seafood barbeque in Jimbaran as the sun sets over the Indian Ocean.
