Nicknamed ‘the Pearl of the Adriatic’, Dubrovnik is Croatia’s most famous city, with UNESCO-protected walls, terracotta rooftops, and breathtaking sea views. It’s where to stay in Croatia if you’re a first-timer to the country, or if you’re a history lover or a luxury traveller. Stay in the Old Town if you want to wake up inside the city walls and step straight into centuries of history, or stay just outside of Ploče or Lapad for quieter, more spacious accommodation with beach access.
Tip: Dubrovnik is busiest in the summer – visit in spring or autumn for fewer crowds.
Split is Croatia’s second largest city and is the perfect choice for where to stay in Croatia for those looking for a blend of ancient and modern. At its heart lies Diocletian’s Palace, a Roman fortress turned living city. Split is the ideal location for nightlife, foodies, taking day trip, and those looking to island hop. Stay in the Old Town to be close to bars restaurants and the ferry port or stay in Bačvice for beach vibes within walking distance to downtown.
Tip: Split is the main ferry hub – ideal for day trips to Hvar, Brač, or Vis.
Hvar is Croatia’s jet set island, famous for its nightlife, upscale resorts, and crystal-clear waters. By day explore lavender fields and hidden coves; by night, join yacht parties and beach clubs. It’s the perfect place to stay in Croatia for party seekers, couples, groups of friends and luxury travellers. Stay in Hvar Town if you want to be in the middle of the action or stay in Stari Grad or Jelsa for a quieter, more authentic island escape.
Tip: Hvar can get busy – book early for summer stays.
Often called ‘Little Dubrovnik’, Korčula had medieval charm without the crowds. The island is also known for white wine (Grk and Pošip) and traditional sword dances. This area of Croatia is best for families, couples, and food and wine lovers. Stay in Korčula Town for cobbled streets and seaside dining, or stay in Lumbarda for sandy beaches and vineyards.
Tip: Rent a bike to explore vineyards and hidden coves.
Zadar is a smaller coastal city with Roman ruins, a charming old town, and unique attractions like the Sea Organ and the Greeting to the Sun installation. This is a good choice for where to stay in Croatia for budget travellers, culture seekers and road trippers. Stay in Zadar’s Old Town for easy access to sights and nightlife or stay along Borik for beachside resorts and family-friendly hotels.
Tip: Zadar is also a great base for daytrips to Plitvice Lakes and Krka National Park.
On the Istrian Peninsula, Rovinj is a Venetian-style fishing town with colourful houses, cobbled streets, and a vibrant art scene. This part of Croatia is ideal for couples. Stay in the Old Town for romance and sea views, or stay in the nearby resorts for spa treatments and seaside luxury.
Tip: Try local Istrian truffle dishes and Malvazija wine.
If waterfalls and hiking are your thing, Plitvice Lakes or Krka National Park are the perfect choices for where to stay in Croatia. These areas are best for hikers, photographers and families. Stay in small guesthouses near the park entrances for early access, or stay in a nearby town (such as Skradin or Krka) for a mix of charm and convenience.
Tip: Visit early morning to avoid the crowds and to capture the best photographs.
Croatia’s capital is often overlooked but offers great museums, coffee culture, and nightlife. It’s also a great transport hub for exploring inland Croatia. Zagreb is the best place to stay in Croatia for year-round city breaks, history buffs and foodies. Stay in the Lower Town for easy access to museums and nightlife, or stay in the Upper Town for historic charm and views.
Tip: Zagreb is particularly magical during its award-winning Christmas Market!
