Amazon Holidays

south & central america
Amazon holidays take you on an adventure into one of the world’s greatest wildernesses. The largest rainforest on Earth, the Amazon spans nine countries and covers around 40% of South America. Stretching across Brazil, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana, the sheer size and scale of the Amazon can be difficult to comprehend.

With 10% of the world's known biodiversity, the Amazon is a dream destination for nature enthusiasts. Home to countless fascinating species including pink river dolphins, sloths, anacondas, caimans and an extraodinary diversity of birdlife, the Amazon's forests and waterways are teeming with life.

Brazil, Peru, Ecuador and Bolivia all offer comfortable lodges nestled deep within the rainforest, promising the perfect base for an Amazon adventure. In Brazil and Peru, you can also experience the mighty Amazon River from the water, journeying through the jungle as it winds its way to the coast. Amazon lodge stays and cruise holidays include an incredible range of activities. Depending on where you choose to stay, experiences may include guided jungle hikes, wildlife-spotting excursions, piranha fishing and canoe trips along tranquil rivers, offering countless opportunities to immerse yourself in the sights and sounds of the rainforest.

Trailfinders offers a range of Amazon holidays and our expert travel consultants are a mine of information about what to do here, often with first-hand travel experience. Whether you want to explore the jungle as part of a longer private tour, immerse yourself in nature at a rustic rainforest lodge, or to float down the river on an Amazon cruise – they are the perfect people to ask.

WHERE TO GO IN THE AMAZON

Each country offers its own unique choice of lodges or cruises, so the best place to see the Amazon is often determined by personal preference and the other sights in South America you wish to see.

In Brazil combine the rainforest with a stay on Rio’s beaches, whilst in Peru visit Machu Picchu before embarking on your Amazon adventure. In Ecuador you can visit the Amazon and the Galápagos Islands for the ultimate wildlife experience, or in Bolivia visit the stunning Uyuni Salt Flats.

Explore the tiles below for more details on each destination or give us a call and speak to one of our expert travel consultants?
Brazilian Amazon
The mighty Amazon River begins its journey in Peru and snakes its way through the world’s largest rainforest to reach the Atlantic coast of Brazil. Rich in biodiversity and home to a variety of wildlife, a visit to this remarkable Amazon region will be a highlight of any holiday to Brazil.
Peruvian Amazon
Covering over half of the country, Peru has the privilege of being home to a sizeable chunk of the mighty Amazon Rainforest. Access this vast wilderness via a cruise, or stay on firm ground in an atmospheric jungle lodge. A visit to the Peruvian Amazon is guaranteed to be an adventure like no other!
Ecuadorian Amazon
Ecuadorian Amazon
Covering nearly half of mainland Ecuador, the Ecuadorian Amazon lies to the east of the Andes Mountain Range and is perhaps the most easily accessible region of this remarkable rainforest. Home to the Yasuni National Park, this remote region can be reached by a short flight from Quito to Coca followed by a boat trip along the Napo River.
Bolivian Amazon
Bolivian Amazon
Accessible by a short flight over the Andes from La Paz, the beginning of each journey into the Bolivian Amazon begins in the small town of Rurrenabaque before a boat trip far into the jungle to your lodge. The extraordinary Madidi National Park is utterly remote, rarely visited and a region for the experienced adventurer.
Amazon Cruises
Amazon Cruise holidays are a great way to access the incredible, world famous Amazon Jungle. Whether it be Brazilian Amazon, Peruvian Amazon or Ecuadorian Amazon, an Amazon cruise will immerse its visitors in the heart of the rainforest, promising a unique vantage point from which to take in the myriad of wildlife and nature that call this area home.

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO VISIT THE AMAZON RAINFOREST?

True to its name, the Amazon is generally hot, humid and wet!

Despite this it does have two varying seasons. The wet season runs from December to June (although this varies slightly by country), bringing vitality to the rainforest and high water levels which allow for boat tours through the flooded forest.

July onward is considered the dry season, providing a greater chance of spotting wildlife lazing along the river banks.

Getting to see such a wide range of biodiversity is an experience you really can’t miss out on. A highlight for me was getting to see giant river otters, caiman, capybaras and monkeys. You should be aware that you are constantly surrounded by wildlife in the Amazon!

Carrie Hawes - expert
Carrie Hawes

The wildlife in the Amazon is incredible, but so are the mosquitos who have the most voracious appetite! As well as DEET and long sleeves, I highly recommend a fabric repellent spray - worked a treat.
