India Holidays

A vast and varied country, a holiday in India has the power to surprise and delight you at every turn. From the snow-capped and majestic Himalayas in the north, through the palaces and temples of the Golden Triangle to the wildlife rich jungles of central India and the coconut palms of the far south, there is bound to be something that appeals to you.

India’s north is a magnificent blend of cities, nature, history and culture, summed up for many by the wonders of the Golden Triangle. In little more than a week you can wander the winding streets of Old Delhi, search for tigers in Ranthambore National Park, visit the desert city of Jaipur and gaze on the pearlescent beauty of the Taj Mahal. With a little more time you can further explore the desert cities of Rajasthan or head north to Shimla, the former capital of the British Raj, Amritsar, home to the exquisite Golden Temple or Varanasi, the legendary holy city on the Ganges.

If you want a taste of India’s culture and attractions with a bit of downtime added in, then the south is the place to do it. Whether it’s lazing on a palm tree backed beach or cruising the serene backwaters of Kerala aboard a traditional houseboat. Away from the beaches and backwaters there are innumerable sights from Cochin’s Chinese fishing nets and historic mosques, to Pondicherry’s bougainvillea draped promenades and French architecture. The temple cities of Tamil Nadu are also a must, with a bevy of ancient wonders, including Madurai’s unmissable Meenakshi Amman complex and the revered shrine of Sri Ranganathaswamy in Trichy.

Trailfinders is the UK and Ireland's No.1 Tour Operator to India. Speak to the expert travel consultants in our dedicated India Team for help planning your holiday. Senior professionals with a passion for the sub-continent, they are mines of information gathered from personal travel experience.

  • When is the best time to visit India?

Due to its size, India experiences some extremes of climate.

North India’s cool season is from October to April while in South India it’s from November to March. Bear in mind cool does not necessarily mean cold as daytime temperatures remain high, with clear skies and sunshine.

The exception is the far north of India in the Himalayas. From October to April the nights are very cold and from December to February the daytime temperature also drops considerably. The summer months here bring warmer temperatures, averaging 25°C.

From April to June, with the exception of the Himalayas, India experiences a hot and humid climate by day and night. The monsoon typically falls on North India from July to September, Goa from May to September and South India from June to November. The climate is humid and wet at this time.
