Negombo is one of the country’s oldest centres for the fishing trade and it’s worth an early start to see the fascinating main fish market at its busiest.

On the southernmost shore, the ruggedly beautiful beaches close to historic Galle albeit narrow, are peaceful and secluded. Heading east along the southern coast lie picturesque coves and a lush green interior. Wherever you stay, a visit to charming Galle Fort is a must.

Scenic Passekudah boasts a number of resorts which line the beautiful wide bay. The lagoon offers shallow warm waters which are protected by a reef, making it ideal for families and great for watersports such as kayaking and windsurfing.

Next to the historic city of Trincomalee, miles of white sand stretch along the shores. Further north, Kuchchaveli offers tranquil beaches and calm clear waters bordered by tropical jungle. Fringed by coral reefs, this coastline is an excellent place for snorkelling and diving.

Bentota is renowned for its peaceful and idyllic wide golden arc of sand and laidback atmosphere. Away from the coast, the calmer waters of the Bentota Ganga lagoon are ideal for watersports and there is a good choice of local restaurants to choose from.

The small village of Wadduwa is relatively underdeveloped and boasts a lovely quiet ribbon of beach, just a 90 minute drive from the airport. Slightly to the south is the bustling market town of Kalutara which offers golden shores which line the coast and lagoons.

Situated close to the airport, Negombo’s golden sand beaches makes for a convenient stay at the start or end of any visit to Sri Lanka. The wide golden sand beach is dotted with fishing boats and local bars and restaurants which enjoy the fabulous sunsets Sri Lanka’s west coast is famous for.
