Peruvian Amazon Holidays

south & central america
Covering more than half of Peru, this stunning expanse of the Amazon Rainforest offers visitors a truly immersive wildlife experience. The best part of the Peruvian Amazon to visit depends largely on how you choose to explore it. Amazon River cruises typically depart from Iquitos in the north, while jungle lodges are generally accessed via Puerto Maldonado in the south.

Whilst each lodge or cruise will offer different experiences, a typical day in the Amazon will see you wake early for breakfast followed by an exciting morning excursion. You may head off on a guided nature walk to explore the forest floor or try spotting birdlife amongst the treetops from an elevated viewing platform. After lunch back at the lodge or aboard your cruise, discover the waterways by kayak or visit an indigenous community. Excursions are conducted in small groups with expert naturalist guides.

The unique Amazon ecosystem is home to amazing wildlife such as pink river dolphins, anacondas, monkeys, sloths and more. In the south, the landscape boasts picturesque oxbow lakes and numerous clay licks where hundreds of brightly-coloured macaws gather to feed. Here, rain is possible at any time but the jungle is driest May to October with wetter months from December to February. In the north, cruise routes will vary between the high water (Nov - May) and low water (Jun - Oct) seasons.

Trailfinders offers a range of Peruvian Amazon holidays and our expert travel consultants are a mine of information about what to do here, often with first-hand travel experience. Whether you want to explore the jungle from an atmospheric lodge or to float down the river on an Amazon cruise – they are the perfect people to ask.

HOW TO EXPLORE

There are two main ways to experience the Peruvian Amazon; spend a few nights surrounded by nature at an atmospheric jungle lodge, or journey along its iconic waterway aboard an Amazon River cruise.

Take a look at the tiles below to help you decide which way of exploring the Peruvian Amazon is right for you.
Amazon Lodges
Amazon Lodges
Puerto Maldonado, easily reached via daily flights from Lima and Cusco, is the starting point for trips into the Tambopata National Reserve in the southern Amazon, one of the most biologically diverse areas in the world. Our featured lodges are located along the banks of the Madre de Dios and Tambopata Rivers, accessed by road and boat from the town. Discover this amazing environment with a range of guided activities from your lodge, including boat trips, hikes and canopy walkways. Rooms are fairly basic and fan-cooled, with many offering private balconies with jungle or river views.
Amazon Cruises
Amazon Cruises
On arrival in the jungle-locked city of Iquitos, transfer to nearby Nauta port to begin your Amazon cruise into the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve. Your daily itinerary will include activities ranging from guided excursions by boat and visits to local communities, to treks through the rainforest and across hanging bridges. Once back on board, retreat to the comfort of your air-conditioned cabin or soak up the views of the passing rainforest from the open air deck. A luxury river cruise offers the perfect opportunity to explore this extraordinary environment in style and reach otherwise inaccessible areas.
