Ecuador Holidays

Imagine a small country, packed with active volcanoes, indigenous tribes, colourful markets, misty cloud forests, tropical beaches, colonial architecture, tropical rainforest, ancient artefacts and ruins thousands of years old.

A country also boasting islands that changed the way we view the planet.

Flamboyant, joyful carnivals, fun, spirited people and a diversity of nature to match anywhere else on earth.

Well, there is such a place.
Holidays in Ecuador can be tailor-made with Trailfinders, meaning you can see what you want, how you want. The utterly unique Galapagos Islands should certainly be on your list, but back on the mainland, the choice really is endless.

In old Quito, churches decorated entirely in Spanish gold-leaf line the cobbled streets along with pastel coloured buildings and crumbling bell towers.
There’s a modern side to the mountain-framed city too and, just two hours away, is the centre of the earth, the equator, and Otavalo Market.
Since pre-Inca times, jungle traders would travel here by foot to sell their wares and to this day, the tradition continues, just amplified as thousands of traders from across the continent converge to trade every week.

Following the Andes southwards, along the Avenue of the Volcanoes, past Cotopaxi and the many haciendas to stay in, you'll have the chance to ride the famous ‘Devil’s Nose’ train before arriving in charming Cuenca.
A quaint, historic town set along a river the pace of life her is blissfully slow. Try the local speciality here – cuy, wander the age-old streets and plazas or enjoy a coffee with the locals.

However, if its wildlife you’re after, then from Quito, simply head west an hour or two for magical Cloud Forests, such as Mindo, one of the most biodiverse regions of earth.
To the east, however, is the Amazonian rainforest.
Different entirely to the mist and the hummingbirds of the cloud-forests; here caimans, giant river otters, piranhas and macaws call this rich, verdant land home.

Ecuador really does have it all.

WHERE TO GO IN ECUADOR

Ecuador map
Quito
Quito
Set high in the Andes, Ecuador’s vibrant capital city boasts a dramatic location in the shadow of the Pichincha Volcano. The carefully restored colonial centre has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is brimming with historical charm. This city is best explored on foot and a walk along the cobbled streets of the old town will reveal lovely views, beautiful plazas, churches and the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
Galápagos Islands
Galápagos Islands
Follow in the footsteps of Charles Darwin with a trip to Ecuador’s Galápagos Islands. Set 600 miles off the mainland, a visit to this archipelago will undoubtedly be a very special and unforgettable experience. The wildlife on these volcanic islands are fearless so it is possible to get remarkably close to them. Explore the islands with expert guides and either choose to stay on board a cruise boat or in a hotel on Santa Cruz Island.
Cloud Forest
Cloud Forest
Perched on the slopes of the Andes are a number of cool and misty cloud forest reserves which are home to an abundance of flora, fauna and birdlife. Spend a few days here following trails through the lush forest vegetation and relaxing in this spectacular environment. Although the cloud forests can be reached within a 2 hour drive from Quito, the peace and tranquillity means you will feel a world away.
Avenue of the Volcanoes
Avenue of the Volcanoes
Soaring volcanic peaks stretch south from Quito through the centre of Ecuador to form the spectacular Avenue of the Volcanoes. The skyline of this beautiful region is dominated by the towering summit of Mount Chimborazo and the snow-capped cone of Cotopaxi, the highest active volcano in the world. The area is also home to rolling green fields, colourful market towns and pretty haciendas.
Cuenca
Cuenca
Cuenca is the birth place of the Panama hat and its red-tiled roofs, cobblestone streets and flowery plazas lend an old-world charm to this beautiful colonial city. Cathedrals and church spires tower above the rooftops including the distinctive sky-blue domes of the ‘New Cathedral’ which was constructed in 1885. The Tomebamba River winds through the city, separating the historic sector from the new modern neighbourhoods
Amazon Rainforest
Amazon Rainforest
Ecuador offers a variety of landscapes ranging from cities to rolling hills and from cloud forests to volcanoes and mountains. To add to this differing scenery, almost a third of the country lies in the Amazon basin. This fascinating region is accessed via a short flight to the town of Coca and from here most lodges in the jungle can only be accessed by boat. Guides will show you the wildlife of the region and teach you about Amazon life.
