The powerful ruling Maeda clan, based in Kanazawa Castle, used much of their wealth not on warfare, but on patronising cultural and artistic pursuits. Its centrepiece is Kenroku-en which is one of the most beautiful gardens in the country.

The city boasts many historical attractions such as restored residences and fascinating old geisha and Samurai districts, as well as modern museums.
