WHERE TO GO IN SALTA & THE NORTHWEST

Nicknamed La Linda, meaning the beautiful in Spanish, the city of Salta contains some of the country’s best preserved colonial architecture and is surrounded by striking scenery very different to that found elsewhere in Argentina. It is also impossible to speak of Salta without mentioning that it is renowned for its empanadas, a delicious South American pasty.

From Salta, drive south past amazing rock formations and along winding roads to the small historic town of Cachi. Visit the nearby National Cactus Park and archeological ruins.
Cafayate

Continue south from Cachi to the vineyards of Cafayate in the Calchaqui Valley. The heart of high altitude wine country, this region is dotted with lovely bodegas (wineries), with the Andes Mountains creating the most perfect backdrop. Spend the days visiting gorgeous wineries, sipping delicious wine and even a dash of culture at the wine museum.

Lying at the base of the dramatic striped hill of seven colours is the pretty village of Purmamarca, a few hours drive north of Salta. Explore the vast salt flats of Salinas Grandes as well as Quebrada de Humahuaca, a stunning canyon. From Purmamarca, the high Andes road to San Pedro de Atacama offers incredible scenery past stunning lagoons and salt flats if you wish to continue your South American adventure into Chile, or it is a three hour drive from Purmamarca to Salta.
