Shamwari Bayethe

Shamwari Bayethe is an exceptional property. The tented accommodation was very spacious and felt secluded from the other rooms. The tents all had outdoor showers and a deck with a private plunge pool (not heated) which was fantastic to relax in between the game drives.

The game drives were fantastic. Shamwari only allows two vehicles per sighting, although it was very rare we actually saw anyone else out on the reserve. The rangers are brilliant and very happy to share their knowledge and stories during the time they have been working at Shamwari. If there were any animals you particularly wanted to see they would do their best to accommodate this. During the mornings hot water bottles, blankets and even fluffy ponchos were laid out for us. The ranger checked the weather during our stay and decided to move up our 3pm game drive to straight after lunch to beat the rain and give us a better experience.

The conservation project was fantastic and worth doing whilst there; they are introducing vultures back into the eastern cape and rehabilitating injured animals. Although the animals are in captivity and it didn't have the same feel as viewing them in the wild, it was still a very interesting and important visit.

The property is surrounded by hills and vegetation which made for a really peaceful experience. Dining at the lodge was excellent; lunch was tapas and dinner was three courses with palette cleansers, and they also have a lovely wine selection!
