Located on Observatory Hill, guests at the Windamere enjoy fantastic views that span down the hill, across the city of Darjeeling and out to the snow-capped Himalayan mountains beyond. Steeped in history, the property started as a ‘chummery’ – a boarding house for unmarried British army officers and planters in the 1880s. Much of the charm of that boarding house atmosphere has been retained including the authentic colonial décor and furniture along with Victorian photographs and assorted historical artefacts. A stay at this simple property feels as if you have truly stepped back in time! Candlelit 5 course evening meals are served in the dining room by white gloved waiters, accompanied by candlelight and music from the 1950s or earlier. The bar hails back to the 1930s and the music room is graced with a 100 year old piano. Accommodation is spread across the original main building as well as a number of cottages and annexes dotted throughout the grounds. Each room, suite and cottage is unique and individually decorated. All feature colonial style furniture, floral furnishings and most have an original fireplace. The Colonial Tea Planter Suites and Colonial Royal Suites are particularly popular, named after the famous individuals who stayed in them over the years including the Princess of Siam and Prince Peter of Greece.
Please note that due to the layout and design of this hotel we do not recommended it for the less mobile.

Trailfinders Hotel Classification Guide
Modest accommodation with basic facilities, representing good value where price is the main priority.
Simple, comfortable accommodation and facilities offering good value for the destination.
Good standard of accommodation and/or facilities and overall a higher level of service may be expected.
High international standards of accommodation and facilities where luxury and quality of service are priorities.
Indicates that the property offers a higher than average level of accommodation and facilities when compared to other properties of the same classification.
Unique, often smaller and sometimes historic properties, which offer individual charm and are consequently very popular. They offer the standards of accommodation indicated by their classification but rooms may be smaller than average and not all facilities may be available.
Trailfinders classifications are for your guidance only and do not mirror any international "star rating" system. In each case, the full description of the property should be read and used in conjunction with the classification indicated. A 3★ city hotel, for example, may be more expensive than a 4★ if it is in a prime location. Classifications are unique to a destination and can reflect local or regional variations in quality and service, so a 5★ in a particular area may not be comparable with a 5★ elsewhere.
