Itinerary

Day 1  Cairns/Darwin to Arnhem Land
Fly from Cairns or Darwin to Arnhem Land, one of Australia’s last untouched regions, and meet your Tour Director in Nhulunbuy. Explore this remote frontier township and take in panoramic views from the Roy Marika Lookout.

Day 2  Gove Peninsula
Learn about community and kinship in aboriginal cultures and experience a special ‘Welcome to Country’ ceremony at Wirrawuy Beach. Visit the Buku-Larrnggay Mulka art centre and take part in a bush medicine demonstration.

Day 3  Nhulunbuy, Arnhem Land to Murwangi
Venture into the heart of Arnhem Land with unsurpassed access to this sacred destination. Aboard the all-terrain 4WD coach, travel the rugged Central Arnhem Road to the Goyder River, the main tributary which feeds the ecologically diverse Arafura Swamp. Here, stay in a tented safari camp exclusive to Outback Spirit.

Day 4  Murwangi
Culturally sacred to the Yolngu People, the Arafura Swamp is one of Australia’s largest wooded wetlands and is extremely ecologically significant. Accompanied by indigenous guides, cruise through the lagoon before travelling around the edge of the swamp on a 4WD adventure.

Day 5  Murwangi to Maningrida
Learn about indigenous art at the remote Bula’bula Art Centre before travelling deeper into Arnhem Land. Cross the Blyth and Cadell Rivers to reach Maningrida in the early afternoon.

Day 6  Maningrida
Embark on a guided fishing adventure on the Liverpool and Tomkinson Rivers. Perhaps try your hand at catching barramundi or sit back and learn about the cultural importance of this region. After, visit the Maningrida Arts & Culture Centre and Djomi Museum for a deeper insight into local traditions.

Day 7  Maningrida to Mount Borradaile
Travel west to Mount Borradaile and arrive at your remote safari lodge, where ancient pathways lead to stunning Aboriginal rock art galleries.

Day 8  Mount Borradaile
Set off in open-back safari vehicles for a full day of exploring Mount Borradaile’s ancient and sacred landscape. See remarkable rock art and view artefacts which reflect thousands of years of occupation. After, cruise along the wetlands of Cooper Creek.

Day 9  Mount Borradaile to Garig Gunak Barlu NP
Leaving Mount Borradaile early, head north into the Cobourg Peninsula and the rugged Garig Gunak Barlu National Park. From here, transfer by boat to Seven Spirit Bay aboard one of the lodge’s custom made adventure crafts.

Days 10-11  Garik Gunak Barlu NP
Today retrace the path of early seafarers on a marine exploration across Port Essington. Take a guided walk through the evocative ruins of Victoria Settlement, an early British outpost from the 1830s. The next day, embark on a fishing adventure in Port Essington with the guides at Seven Spirits Bay able to take you to the best fishing spots among the meandering creeks and bays. After, set off on a 4WD safari through mangroves and savannah woodlands, keeping an eye out for buffalo and banteng.

Day 12  Garik Gunak Barlu NP to Darwin
Say farewell to the wild beauty of the Cobourg Peninsula and take the short scenic flight to Darwin. Spend the afternoon exploring the city at your leisure before enjoying a farewell dinner on a sunset cruise on the harbour.

Day 13  Darwin
The tour ends this morning as you prepare for your onward journey.
