Itinerary
Day 1 Porretta Terme
Arrive in Porretta Terme at any time.
Day 2 Porretta Terme to Lizzano
Explore Porretta Terme this morning before setting off on your first walk. Head in the direction of Castelluccio, an ancient village with a crumbling castle and sweeping views over the surrounding area. Pass through a series of captivating hamlets, arriving in Lizzano this afternoon.
Day 3 Lizzano
Take a short transfer ahead of a fairly strenuous walk to the summit of Mount Belvedere, offering fantastic panoramic views of the Apennines. Part of the route is along the ‘Freedom Path’ that commemorates the sacrifice of the local resistance fighters and American troops who fought the Germans here.
Day 4 Lizzano to Pianaccio
Leaving Lizzano, gradually ascend towards Monteacuto, passing several hamlets, the Sanctuary of Madonna del Faggio, old water mills and ‘window’ viewpoints through the trees, from which the dramatic peaks of La Nuda and Monte Grande can be seen. Monteacuto is well worth taking some time to explore, as the medieval village is one of the region’s prettiest. Later, descend to Pianaccio, your next destination.
Day 5 Pianaccio
Start the day with a short transfer before a steady ascent to Porta Franca and its refuge on the border between Tuscany and Emilia Romagna. At certain times of the year, many migrating birds can be seen soaring above the peaks. Depending on energy levels, you might like to detour to the summit of Mount Gennaio, followed by a descent across the high pastures of the western flank of the Corno alle Scale, following an ancient mule track.
Day 6 Pianaccio to Vidiciatico
Ascend steadily through the tranquil, wooded Bagnatori Valley to the panoramic summit of Monte Grande, from where a path descends via a delightful hamlet to the attractive village of Vidiciatico. Alternatively, if the weather is poor, a second option is available which bypasses the summit of Monte Grande to a lovely col, before descending to Vidiciatico.
Day 7 Vidiciatico
Perhaps the highlight walk of the week, transfer to Madonna dell’Acero and follow the Dardagna river along the valley to the Dardagna Falls. From the falls, enjoy open views on your way to Lago del Scaffaiolo, followed by a stunning ridge walk to the highest point, Corno alla Scale, crowned by the iconic metal cross that has been visible for most of your time in the Apennines.
Day 8 Vidiciatico
Your self guided walking tour ends today, depart at any time after breakfast.
