Gastronomic Delights of Northern Spain

Day 1  Bilbao  
Fly to Bilbao and upon arrival, transfer to your hotel in the city centre. Later, wander along the riverfront on a small group food tour for your first taste of the city’s culinary delights, avant-garde architecture and contemporary sculptures.

Day 2  Bilbao  
Enjoy the day exploring the sights of this magnificent city. Meander the historic ‘Seven Streets’ of Casco Viejo, Bilbao’s atmospheric old town. Perhaps visit the great international symbol of modern art that is the Guggenheim Museum. This imposing titanium, limestone and glass structure is hailed as one of the most important buildings of the 20th Century and houses a wealth of masterpieces.

Day 3  Bilbao to San Sebastián  
This morning, pick up your car and head along the sparkling coastline towards lovely San Sebastián. En route, stop at the dramatic island of San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, one of the most photographed locations on the Basque coast. The scenic road then passes through a number of traditional fishing villages, perfect for a tasty lunch stop.

Day 4  San Sebastián  
Choose to start your day with a hike to the top of Urgull, a hill situated right in the heart of the city and adorned with a 12th Century castle. Walk along La Concha beach before heading to Miramar Palace, the historic summer residence of the Spanish royal family. This evening, dine like a local and discover the joy of pintxos on your small group food tour.

Day 5  San Sebastián to La Rioja  
Leave the grandeur of San Sebastián behind and make your way south to La Rioja, enjoying the changing views as the city makes way for rolling countryside. Vineyards stretch as far as the eye can see, punctuated by sleepy medieval towns.

Day 6  La Rioja  
Wine production rules this picturesque region and you’ll find a myriad of vineyards to visit and vintages to taste. Perhaps head to Logroño, a stop on the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage trail and home to a number of the region’s most famous wine houses. Alternatively, visit the Vivanco museum in Briones, boasting a vast collection of historic wine paraphernalia and artwork as well as a fantastic cellar tour.

Day 7  Fly home  
Drive to Bilbao airport to drop off your car in time for your flight home.
