Itinerary
Days 1-2 Chicago
Arrive in Chicago. Spend a couple of days exploring the sights of this fabulous Midwestern city, including world-renowned art in The Art Institute of Chicago, the panoramic views from the Willis Tower and the famous Cloud Gate sculpture.
Day 3 Chicago to Springfield, Illinois
Pick up your motorhome ready to embark on the road trip of a lifetime. Join Route 66 from its start in the heart of downtown Chicago and follow the signs for this historic route as you make your way to Springfield. Stop along the way at a number of roadside attractions, including the Old Juliet Prison where the Blues Brothers was filmed, and the World’s Largest Covered Wagon.
Day 4 Springfield to St Louis
Continue past more Americana style attractions, such as the World's Largest Catsup Bottle, and cross the famous Old Chain of Rocks Bridge over the Mississippi River into Missouri and the city of St Louis. Known as the ‘Gateway to the West’, explore the world’s tallest arch which towers over the city, and take a tram to an observation deck at the top for excellent views. Perhaps visit an iconic Route 66 institution dating back to 1929 at the Ted Drewes frozen custard shop, and try the renowned ‘concrete’ custard, named due to its thick consistency.
Day 5 St Louis to Springfield, Missouri
Journey on across Missouri, stopping en route at Meramec Caverns, with unique geological formations and a fascinating history as the former hideout of outlaw Jesse James. Arrive in Springfield, Missouri, ‘The Birthplace of Route 66’.
Day 6 Springfield to Oklahoma City
Leave Missouri as you make your way to Oklahoma City. Break up the journey with stops at the novelty roadside attraction of the Catoosa Blue Whale and visit Pops 66 Soda Ranch for a sweet treat.
Day 7 Oklahoma City to Amarillo
Travel through Oklahoma and the Texan Panhandle on the next section of your drive as you head to Amarillo. Opt to stop at the Elk City Museum Complex for several intriguing museums, including the National Route 66 Museum. Upon arriving in Amarillo, be sure to visit Cadillac Ranch, an art exhibition of graffitied Cadillac’s half-buried in the sand, with visitors welcome to spray paint their mark on to the cars.
Days 8-9 Amarillo to Albuquerque
Get back on the road and mark passing the halfway point of your journey with classic 1950s American fare at the Midpoint Café in Adrian. Pass by the neon signs of Tucumcari and arrive in historic Albuquerque. Spend the following day at leisure strolling through the old town and soaking up the ambience and Southwestern culture of this charming city.
Day 10 Albuquerque to Flagstaff
Make your way to Flagstaff via Gallup. Appreciate the rich Native American culture, explore the colourful wall murals and shop for local handicrafts. Drive across the striking landscape of Petrified Forest National Park, stopping to take in awe-inspiring views of the Painted Desert.
Day 11 Flagstaff
Today, visit one of America’s natural wonders with a day out to the south rim of the Grand Canyon, an unforgettable sight.
Days 12-13 Flagstaff to Las Vegas
Take a popular detour from the route to the bright lights of Las Vegas. See the flashy hotels and casinos that line the strip, watch the Bellagio fountain display and discover exciting entertainment with many world-renowned shows to choose from.
Day 14 Las Vegas to Los Angeles
Leave Vegas and cross the desert into California. Complete your epic road trip as you reach the iconic end of Route 66 sign in Santa Monica. Drop off your motorhome this afternoon and enjoy some time to explore Santa Monica’s stylish pier and sandy beach.
Day 15 Los Angeles
Spend the day sightseeing in exciting Los Angeles. Head to Hollywood to see the Walk of Fame and famous sign overlooking the city, or perhaps make your way to glamorous Beverly Hills for some fabulous shopping.
Day 16 Los Angeles
Make your way to the airport for your flight home.
